Two sports added to EUC 2021 schedule
Handball and Rugby 7s have been added to the sports programme for the 2021 European Universities Championships, taking the confirmed total of sports competitions so far to 19.
Following the EUSA Executive Committee meeting held in Ljubljana at the end of November, Podgorica in Montenegro was confirmed as hosts of the 2021 European Universities Handball Championships, while Portugal’s capital Lisbon was recently given the green light to host the 2021 European Universities Rugby 7s Championship.
Handball has a rich history in EUSA Championships since the first edition was organised in Besancon, France in 2006, with the competition in 2021 confirmed as the 11th edition of the sport in the EUSA Championship programme.
A successful European Universities Handball Championship was this year held in Bydgoszcz, Poland involving over 350 participants from 22 teams representing 19 universities from 11 different countries.
Rugby 7s returns to the EUSA Championships programme for the 9th time following the last edition in Milan, Italy in 2017 which involved over 200 participants representing 10 different universities from across the continent.
The inclusion of Handball and Rugby 7s on the programme takes the total number of competitions for the 2021 European Universities Championships so far to 19, with a confirmed list of all sports and host cities set to be finalised later next year.
The confirmed list so far reads as follows:
- 3x3 Basketball: Debrecen (HUN)
- Badminton: Miskolc (HUN)
- Basketball: Aveiro (POR)
- Beach Championships (Beach Volleyball, Beach Handball): Malaga (ESP)
- Combat Sports (Kickboxing, Taekwondo, Judo, Karate): Zagreb (CRO)
- Football: Tirana (ALB)
- Futsal: Split (CRO)
- Handball: Podgorica (MNE)
- Orienteering: St. Gallen (SUI)
- Rowing: Bydgoszcz (POL)
- Rugby 7s: Lisbon (POR)
- Table Tennis: Olomouc (CZE)
- Tennis: Lodz (POL)
- Volleyball: Guimaraes (POR)
- Water Polo: Miskolc (HUN)
Prior to the Championship in Podgorica in 2021, Handball will also feature as one of 21 sporting disciplines at the fifth edition of the European Universities Games taking place in Belgrade, Serbia next year.
Over 5 500 participants are expected in the Serbian capital for the two-week multi-sports event, taking place from July 12-25 2020.
Registrations for next year’s Games are open, with interested participants encouraged to contact the national university sport body in their country for more details on how to enter.
