Objective and Aims

(excerpt from the EUSA Statutes)

 

1. The name of the association shall be "European University Sports Association" and the association's official abbreviation shall be "EUSA" (hereinafter "Association"). The Association will be non-profit making and does not pursue commercial objectives.
2. The objectives of EUSA are
a) to maintain and develop regular communication between the national federations;
b) to co-ordinate competitions, conferences, mass-sport-events and other activities both at university and national level;
c) to represent university sport in general and the member federations in particular in relation to European organisations;
d) to encourage and support the promotion of ethics, Fair Play, gender equity and good governance in sport as well as education of university students through sport
e) to encourage and support measures protecting the health of the athletes
f) to act against doping in sport and any other kind of manipulation
g) to disseminate throughout Europe the ideals of university sport in close collaboration with the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and other European organisations.

History – overview

2023  

The 2023 European Universities Championships was another great season for EUSA, celebrated with a record number of 5570 participants that took part in EUSA Championship season, covering both summer and winter editions. In total, 22 different sporting competitions made up the 2023 Championship program, which took place at 16 different events in 15 host cities in 10 different countries around Europe.  The year of 2023 is the inaugural year of the European Universities Winter Championships, an event that merges Alpine Skiing, Snowboarding and Snow Volleyball into one event, held in Val Di Zoldo, Italy.  These three sports show up on EUSA Championships sports program for the very first time, organized all together as one event hosting three different competitions with its own disciplines. 

The bidding for European Universities Championships 2027 was opened, while for the European Universities Games 2028, three candidate cities are involved in the hosting competition: Granada (ESP), Manisa (TUR) and Split (CRO). In 2023, EUSA organized a successful General Assembly, EUSA – FISU Strategic Dialogue as well as EUSA Gala, all together combining in an excellent event held in Kusadasi (TUR).

EUSA remained a committed partner in the European Week of Sport, International Day of University Sport, and other projects, co-funded by the European Commission and the International University Sports Federation (FISU). EUSA through EUSA Institute entered new projects partnerships in the field of dual career, mental health, and good governance, funded under Erasmus+ programme.

In 2023, EUSA managed to welcome and host two groups of European Solidarity Corps volunteers. One group started in February until August, while the second group was welcomed in October and will stay until August 2024. Besides this, two volunteers from the Italian Civil Service were also welcomed in November 2023.

2022  

The 6th edition of the European Universities Games (EUG2022), which were held in Lodz, Poland, saw 4459 participants, 417 universities from 37 countries in Europe.
Besides the successful realisation of the European Universities Games 2022, in 2022 EUSA attributed the 2026 games to the Italian city of Salerno. The bidding for the European Universities Games 2028 was also opened. The European Universities Championship in Rowing was also successfully realised in 2022, organised in Istanbul (TUR). Various educational events, seminars and webinars were done throughout the year, including EUSA-FISU seminar, EUSA Convention, webinar on the topic of European Universities Championships 2023, seminar on volunteering, workshop on dual career and many more. EUSA through EUSA Institute became a coordinator of a new Erasmus+ project, Enhancing Sport Organisations and Management (ESOM) and remained active in the already ongoing projects. Two projects were kicked off in 2022, K2S-GenZ and the Youth Integrity Ambassadors Program (YIAP), while two were successfully concluded, Be(ach) Volunteer, Be(ach) Fair! (VolFair) and Work for a Cause, Serve for Sport (W4C-S4S). EUSA remained active as a patronage holder of the European Open University Powerlifting Cup, International Rowing Regatta Sveti Duje, SELL Fames, European Boccia Integrative Championship, Friendship Games, and International Student Christmas Tournament. In 2022, the decision EUSA Goes Winter was made, confirming the first ever European Universities Winter Championships to be held in Val Di Zoldo, in December 2023. EUSA remained a committed partner in the European Week of Sport, International Day of University Sport, and other projects, co-funded by the European Commission and the International University Sports Federation (FISU).

2021  

EUSA remained a committed partner in the European Week of Sport, International Day of University Sport and other projects, co-funded by the European Commission and the International University Sports Federation (FISU). EUSA through EUSA Institute entered new projects partnerships in "Future volunteers - Key to success is Generation Z: K2S – GENZ" project, focusing on volunteering and skills development and Young Integrity Ambassadors Program: YIAP, supported by Erasmus+ programme in the field of youth, focusing on volunteering and good governance. In addition, the project Lodz, we can – EUGames 2022 (EUGames) was selected for funding as the not for profit sport event. From the already approved projects, the Green Sport Hub Europe, Inclusion in Sport (iSport), PROGRES, W4C-S4S, Uni4S, BRAVA, VolFair were launched throughout the year. Progress and activities were made in relation to the other ongoing projects, as well. EUSA hosted new European Solidarity Volunteers in 2021. EUSA continued developing partnerships also with sports bodies, signing MOU with the I International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA), as well as having working meetings with various European sport associations, such as European Judo Union, European Chess Union, FISU , World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF).  EUSA – FISU Strategic Dialogue, EUSA General Assembly and EUSA Awards were also held in 2021. Due to Covid 19, EUC Cycling and European Universities Games Belgrade 2021 were cancelled. Bidding for European Universities Championships 2025 and European Universities Games 2026 were opened and ongoing, as well as the registrations and preparations for the European Universities Games 2022. EUSA stayed active on developing and working on topics of inclusion, gender equality, volunteerism, good governance, and many others.

2020  

EUSA remained a committed partner in the European Week of Sport, International Day of University Sport and other projects, co-funded by the European Commission and the International University Sports Federation (FISU). #BeActive and #LetsIDUS activities were implemented in adjusted forms due to Covid 19 pandemic. EUSA through EUSA Institute entered new projects partnerships as coordinator for the Inclusion in Sport (iSport project) and in Brand Value Alignment through Dual Career (BRAVA), Micro Learning Entrepreneurship for Athletes (MLEA) , (Uni)ted forces to support the education of (Uni)versity sport comm(Uni)ty (Uni4S), PROmoting GendeR Equality in Sports (PROGRES), Green Sports Hub Europe (GSHE), Work for a cause, serve for sport (W4C), Be(ach) Volunteer, Be(ach) Fair! (VolFair), as a partner. The Innovating Football Leadership: Inclusion through Policy and Practice [iFlipp] was officially kicked off in 2020. Progress and activities were implemented in relation to the other ongoing projects EdMedia, GetZ, HALT and RYSE.
EUSA continued developing partnerships also with sports bodies and other entities,  signing MOU with ParaVolley and with Radio Capodistria. New partnership was made with the European Powerlifting Federation and cooperation was strengthened with European Handball Federation and Rugby Europe.

The bidding process for the European Universities Games 2026 was officially opened. Due  to Covid 19, European Universities Games Belgrade 2021 were postponed. 

2019   New record season of the European Universities Championships was recorded.
EUSA remained a committed partner in the European Week of Sport, International Day of University Sport and other projects, co-funded by the European Commission and the International University Sports Federation (FISU). EUSA through EUSA Institute entered new projects partnerships in the field of social inclusion and equal opportunities, funded under Erasmus+ programme. EUSA Institute also became partner in several other EU-funded projects on dual career, anti-doping, safeguarding sport, social inclusion and equal opportunities.
2018   The 4th edition of the European Universities Games (EUG2018), which were held in Coimbra, Portugal, saw 4027 participants, forming 504 university teams, representing 289 universities from 38 countries in Europe.
Spanish capital Madrid was the location of the EUSA Assembly, followed by FISU-EUSA Strategic Dialogue.
EUSA continued developing partnerships also with sports bodies, signing MOU with European Olympic Committees (EOC)and World Taekwondo Europe (WTE) in 2018.
EUSA remained a committed partner in the European Week of Sport, International Day of University Sport and other projects, co-funded by the European Commission and the International University Sports Federation (FISU). EUSA through EUSA Institute received EU support for funding two projects as the project coordinator - Supporting Mobility and Good Practice Exchange in University Sport as one of the preparatory action pilot projects, and PRODUCE - Promoting Dual Career through Education of Young Journalists, funded under Erasmus+ programme. EUSA Institute also became partner in several other EU-funded projects on dual career, anti-doping, safeguarding sport, social inclusion and equal opportunities.
2017   14 cities hosted 19 European Universities Sports Association in a record-breaking season for University sport with more than 4100 athletes from 43 countries.
EUSA developed its sports programme with the announcement of partnerships with European Karate Federation (EKF), European Table Tennis Union (ETTU), European Volleyball Confederation (CEV), Rugby Europe and WAKO Europe.  
EUSA remained a committed partner in the European Week of Sport and other projects, co-funded by the European Commission and the International University Sports Federation (FISU). EUSA through EUSA Institute received EU support for funding ENAcT project on encouraging social inclusion and equal opportunities in sport. EUSA Institute also became partner in other EU-funded projects on dual career and one on gender equality.
2016   EUSA General Assembly in Wroclaw re-elected Mr Adam Roczek as the President, and elected a new Executive Committee for the period 2016-2020.
The third edition of the European Universities Games was held in Zagreb and Rijeka in the July, breaking all EUSA records, in participation, in sports and volunteers.
EUSA remains committed partner in the European Week of Sport and other projects, co-funded by the European Commission and the International University Sports Federation (FISU). New project launched in 2016 is the VOICE project, addressing prevention of sexual violence and harrasment in sport.
EUSA Institute was established to manage projects and support development.
2015   19 European Universities Championships were held across Europe, some in countries where EUSA events have not yet been organised. EUSA launched the EUSA Conference in a new, 2-day format, and the first edition was held in Zagreb, Croatia, alongside with the Convention for the Organisers of the 3rd European Universities Games, to take place in 2016.
EUSA continued its participation in European projects; concluding the funding cycle of some of them and starting a new one - SCORE, on promotion of gender equality in coaching. We continued hosting the European Voluntary Service (EVS) volunteers in the office. Using the EUC Rowing in Hannover, EUSA organised also accompanying events for the premier edition of the European Week of Sport.
Partnerships with European Chess Union (ECU), International Dance Organisation (IDO) and Badminton Europe were formalised, as well as recognition by the European Commission to be an official partner in the European Week of Sport.
2014   The 2nd edition of the European Universities Games (EUG2014), was celebrated between July 24 and August 8 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, commemorating the 15th anniversary of EUSA. A total of 2830 participants from 280 university teams, representing 174 universities from 34 countries in Europe, took part in the event, which included 10 different sports on the programme.
Partnerships with the European Non-Governmental Sports Organisation (ENGSO), European Paralympic Committee (EPC), European Bridge League (EBL), International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) were formalised.
2013   17 European Universities Championships were held across Europe, some in countries where EUSA events have not yet been organised. Moreover, the record number in participation has been recorded.The Assembly was held in Funchal/Madeira, Portugal and was preceded by an important Conference on university sport.
A Convention was organised for the Organisers of the 2nd European Universities Games, to take place in 2014.
EUSA continued its participation in European projects; officially concluding the Prevention of sexual violence in sports project and hosting the European Voluntary Service (EVS) volunteer in the office.
Partnerships with European Fair Play Movement (EFPM) and European Handball Federation (EHF) have been formalised, with more organisations to follow in the future.
2012   2012 was another important milestone in the history of EUSA.
It was the year when the 1st European Universities Games were organised – hosted in Cordoba, Spain. The event was very successful, with over 2500 participants, and included 10 sports in the EUSA programme.The Assembly was held in Maribor, Slovenia and elected a new Executive Committee, led by Mr Adam Roczek as the new President. Two new organisations/countries joined EUSA (Armenia and Liechtenstein), totalling the number of members to 45.
EUSA successfully organised two Conventions – first in January for the Organisers of the EUSA Games and in November for the organisers of the 2013 European Universities Championships.
The participation of EUSA in European projects continued; officially concluding the European Anti-Doping Initiative (EADIn), and being a part of the Prevention of sexual violence in sports project. In 2012, EUSA also officially became accredited for the European Commission’s Youth in Action programme of European Voluntary Service (EVS).
2011   2011 was another record-breaking year for EUSA. 16 European Universities Championships were organised in 15 cities in 13 European countries, also breaking the participation record with 3630 participants.
The General Assembly was held in Eilat, Israel, preceded by European University Sports Conference.
EUSA proved to be a successful and reliable partner of the European Anti-Doping Initiative (EADIn) and joined also the project Prevention of sexual violence in sports – Impulses for an open, secure and sound sporting environment in Europe. An extensive study on Gender equality in University Sports has been carried out and publicly presented, also in cooperation with FISU.
2010   After celebrating its 10th anniversary a year before, EUSA gained its own offices in Ljubljana, Slovenia in 2010. While the organisation is still based in Switzerland, the secretariat now has its own premises in Ljubljana, after being hosted by Slovenian University Sports Association and the University of Ljubljana for several years in the past.
11 European Universities Championships were organised, with over 2700 participants attending them. An EUSA Cup in Billiards also took place in Estonia.
Due to the change of fiscal year, correlating to the calendar year, the assembly was moved to March 2011.
EUSA joined the European Anti-Doping Initiative (EADIn) as one of the core partners and attributed the organisation of the 1st European Universities Games for 2012 to Cordoba, Spain.
EUSA acquired a new main sponsor – Asiana Airlines, with FISU being its strong partner.
2009   EUSA celebrated 10th anniversary, the main celebration was held at the General Assembly in Vienna, Austria. Special recognitions were awarded at the ocassion of 10th anniversary for achievements 1999-2009.
15 European Universities Championships were organised, with Golf, Taekwondo and Bridge being added to the EUC list. The participation number reached 3000 student athletes, representing 417 universities from 32 countries.
Unfortunately, 2009 was also marked by the death of one of the iniciators and the first President of the European University Sports Association, Mr Enno Harms.
2008   11 European Universities Championships were organised with 29 European countries, representing 2800 participants and 280 university teams participating. Ukraine, Turkey and Ireland hosted the EUC for the first time.
The 10th EUSA General Assembly took place in Paris, France.The Executive Committee was enlarged by two members.
2007   12 European Universities Championships were organised with over 2800 participants and 360 university teams from 33 countries.
General Assembly was held in Belgrade / SRB.
New board was elected for the next 4-year term. EUSA has today 40 members. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Belarus became new members, Denmark was suspended.
2006   Handball was added to the EUC programme.
General Assembly in Valencia / ESP.
Websites of EUSA and EUSA STC were redesigned, EUSA Forums additionally established.
2005   Rowing was added to the EUC programme.
EUSA Symposium was held in Madeira / ESP. The next symposium will be in 2007.
General Assembly in Wroclaw / POL.
EUSA STC website was set up.
Certificate of Academic Eligibility was standardised and is to be used an all subsequent EUSA sporting events.
2004   EUC in Badminton, Futsal and Beach-Volleyball were added to the sports programme – it is now comprised of 9 sports. The 3rd Symposium was held in Falun / SWE.
In December, EUSA published the 1st EUSA Magazine.
General Assembly in Nottingham / GBR.
The GA adopted a series of amendments of the statutes. Among others the new position of a Treasurer and a non-voting, paid Secretary General was installed; the limitation for EC members to 3 terms (2 years) was removed.
2003   With Football (Rome) and Karate (Podgorica), 2 new sports had been added to the EUC. The second Syposium was held in Crete.
Beginning in July, the first employee was hired in the office in Hanover.

The number of EC members was increased from 9 to 11.
2002   The postponed 1st Symposium took place in Nicosia / CYP.
EUC Basketball (Koper/SLO) and Volleyball (Athens/GRE) with increasing participation.

CEDU / Spain joint EUSA as 35th member federation.
The GA decided to establish a Student commission in order to enhance the participation of students.
2001   The first EUC were organised in Basketball (Aveiro/POR) and Volleyball (Belgrade/YUG).
A first Symposium had to be cancelled because of the events of September 11th in New York.

5 more countries became members which totals the membership to 34.
2000   General Assembly 2000 in Paris
4 more countries became members. The GA approved the introduction of European Championships based on University teams for 2001.
1999   Foundation in Vienna
The European University Sports Association (EUSA) is an organisation of the national university sports federations in Europe.
It was founded in November 1999 in Vienna/Austria by 25 national federations.
