Touchdown for teams at EUGames
Wednesday, July 30, saw new champions being crowned at the European Universities Games 2014 in Rotterdam.
The largest university sport event in Europe features 10 sports - badminton, basketball, football, futsal, handball, rowing, rugby 7's, table tennis, tennis and volleyball. Apart from sports, the Games include educational, cultural and social events and activities. European Universities Games are held under the auspices of the European University Sports Association (EUSA), supported by the City of Rotterdam, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Erasmus TopSport, and other partners, and are co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union. Support to the Games was given also by the International University Sports Federation (FISU).
Half-way through the event, the representatives of the Organising Committee and EUSA met for an informal working lunch with the representatives of the national university sports associations which are coordinating their university teams during the Games. The coordinators were able to express their comments and suggestions, in order to make the event more enjoyable for participants. Some of the teams’ representatives also used the occasion to meet with the EUSA Office to discuss future plans.
Today, in the women finals of Rugby 7’s the University Toulouse III – Paul Sabatier (FRA) won the title of the champions, sowing supremacy over the 2nd placed National Sports Academy Vasil Levski (BUL), and University of Porto (POR) on third place.
In men’s category, the Utrecht University (NED) won third place, with Siberian Federal University (RUS) second and the winner Georgian National University SEU (GEO).
After the finals in rugby, the focus was shifted to the finals in tennis competition. Women’s team of the Moscow State University of Economics and Statistics (RUS) lost in the finals again the University of Bordeaux (FRA) who won the gold, and the University of Split (CRO) winning bronze.
In men’s competition, the finals were held between the athletes from Istanbul Aydin University (TUR) and Kozminski University (POL). In a very tight match, Istanbul Aydin University won 2:1 and received the champion’s title. University of Stirling (GBR) came third and claimed the bronze.
With the finish of two new sports at the European Universities Games in Rotterdam, the event is currently hosting the rowing competitions before the start of competitions in basketball, football, volleyball and badminton this weekend.
