It was all pomp and fun as 17 teams from 7 Universities with students from 9 nations including Uganda, South Africa, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Lesotho, Sudan, DR. Congo, Zimbabwe and South Sudan played their hearts out between December 4 and 6 at the 1st Afro-Varsity 3x3 challenge hosted by Makerere University, at the pool court.

The University of Johannesburg, participating for the 1st Time in a 3x3 Basketball event with both women and men’s team could not make it out of the group stages despite a great performance displayed. “We did our best. We have learnt a lot from here and hope to take these lessons back home. Basketball in Uganda is very competitive. The trip was worth every penny spent.”

Female students competition

Uganda Christian University (Women) and Ndejje University (Men) were the eventual winners of the event, proving their worth as the teams that represented Uganda at the recently concluded World University 3x3 League in Xiamen China, where they were joined by two teams from Senegal as the only African representatives at the world event. Uganda Christian University, under the captaincy of Lokwameri Zainah, won Nkumba University, captained by Ekone Brenda both members of Uganda’s Basketball team at the 2015 Universiade Gwangju. Ndejje had to fight hard to win against Kampala International University.
