Switzerland to bid for the 2021 Winter Universiade

Swiss University Sport Federation (SUSF/SHSV) is a very active organisation in university sport on national, European and World level. Through their coordination, several European Universities Championships have been organised, as well as World University Championships. The most recent was the European Universities Golf Championship.

It is therefore no surprise that SUSF confirmed earlier this year their bid for the 2021 Winter Universiade in Lucerne and Central Switzerland. The idea is strongly supported also by Lucerne’s Cantonal Government, which welcomes the idea of Lucerne’s and Central Switzerland’s candidacy for the Winter Universiade.

Mount Pilatus, one of the symbols of Lucerne

End of August, Guido Graf, Government Councillor of the Canton of Lucerne, opened the official kick-off meeting of the 2021 WU Bidding Committee of Lucerne-Central Switzerland. He underlined the importance of a potential Winter Universiade for the City and the Canton of Lucerne, but also for the other Cantons of Central Switzerland such as Zug, Nidwalden, Obwalden, Uri and Schwyz.

Support also by the highest officials

He thanked the initiative of the Swiss University Sport Federation, represented by Managing Director Leonz Eder who approached the Lucerne Government and convinced them to seriously evaluate the possibility to bid for the 29th Winter Universiade. The Governments of the six cantons of Central Switzerland agreed after several meetings to officially launch the candidature in cooperation with the International University Sports Federation (FISU).
