Switzerland honours student-athlete achievers
Despite difficult conditions due to COVID-19, the Swiss Students Sports Awards ceremony was held for the second time in Lucerne on Friday, October 16, honouring student-athletes who have excelled in their respective sports.
Ajla Del Ponte was the big winner on the night, walking away with the prestigious Swiss Students Sports Award 2020. The talented track runner shone at the at the 2019 FISU World University Games in Napoli, Italy, where she won silver in the 100m sprint and gold in the 4x100m relay.
Renato Maggi, Head of Delegation, addressed those present, praising Ajla Del Ponte as an outstanding example of dual career, combining top elite sports and studies and describing her as a role model for many other athletes in Switzerland.
An honorary prize was also awarded to Caroline Agnou, a track and field athlete and bronze medal winner at the 2019 FISU Games.
In addition, all the medal winners of the 2019 European Universities Championships in Rowing and Orienteering were honoured for their great achievements in the European competitions. Daniel Studer, who is responsible for all the EUSA events at Swiss University Sports, reported that students from different Swiss Universities won medals in Orienteering, Badminton, Kickboxing, Rowing, Golf and Taekwondo.
Taking into account the current protection protocol and measures, the 2020 Swiss Students Sports Awards ceremony was an occasion enjoyed by all, accompanied by music, singers and dancers who provided the evening’s entertainment.
