Successful Olympics and students

The 2012 Olympic Games were held in London, United Kingdom between July 27 and August 12, 2012. The 30th edition of the Summer Olympiad of the modern era attracted around 10,500 athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees.

The Games concluded with the closing ceremony at the Olympic Stadium on August 12, paying tribute to UK music, fashion and culture. The Olympic flame was extinguished and the flag passed on to the next organisers - the City of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

A not-so-small contingent of student athletes and several former participants in international university sports events were representing their home countries and territories in this year's Olympics. They were not only one of their country's official representatives; several of them were also very successful in claiming medals.

The list of the current student athletes and former international university sports events participants has been prepared by the Media department of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). According to the data they received, 94 former SU/WUC participants won an Olympic medal during the London Games. For details, please see www.fisu.net.

Apart from the students competing at the Olympic Games, the event also attracted several experienced student volunteers and also media representatives, a few of them participating in the FISU/AIPS Young Reporters’ Program during the 2011 Universiade. Some of them will also be active in the Paralympic Games, which are taking place in the Olympic venues in London between August 29 and September 9, 2012.
