Student Sports official new NOC President in Finland

Finnish Student Sports Federation (OLL) alumnus Mr Risto Nieminen was elected President of the Finnish National Olympic Committee. Mr Nieminen, recently retired CEO of lottery company Veikkaus, has been voted as the new President of the Finnish NOC for the next four year term. 

 

His working career and numerous positions of trust began in the Finnish Students Sports Federation, where Mr Nieminen was a member of the board from 1974 to 1976. In the fall of 1976 he was elected Secretary General, a post which he held until the end of 1979. In 1979 he became a member of the International Control Committee (CIC) of FISU, and held the post until 1987, when he was elected as a member of the FISU Executive Committee. In 2003, after a period of 16 years he left the Executive Committee and was named honorary member of FISU. Last year he was named Chair of FISU's new Marketing and Strategic Partnership Committee.

 

The President and the members of the board were elected by the delegation of the Finnish NOC on 21 November. The Students Sports Federation was represented by Sports Director Mr Jukka Tirri. Mr Nieminen was nominated collectively by the Finnish Students Sports Federation, the Finnish Basketball Association and the Finnish Badminton Association.
