Reflecting on the 2016 EUSA Student Commission Meeting

The Student Commission (STC) of the European University Sports Association (EUSA) met in Ljubljana, Slovenia on March 25, 2016.

This live meeting of the EUSA STC represented a great opportunity to achieve a large amount of work and obtain some key actions from the meeting, but it was also as a great opportunity to experience a new and interesting culture and to meet and interact with the local people. Especially for those members who have never been to Slovenia before.

As this was the first live meeting of the Commission since our new members were elected last year; it was very beneficial that we all arrived on Thursday, allowing us to get to know each other much better than possible over Skype for the past few months. It also gave us the opportunity to visit the EUSA Office to see where and how the organisation is run as well as incorporate some sightseeing of Ljubljana.

EUSA STC in Ljubljana

There were six members of the STC expected to travel but due to the closure of Brussels airport our Chair, Isabella Colafranceso couldn’t attend. Isabella did join us on Skype for the duration of the meeting. It was decided that I would be Chair designate for the meeting. The agenda items would be outlined by the STC Chair and then she would listen in while the rest of the members discussed the item before reverting with our conclusions to her. This system worked well and we discussed a large and varied number of topics in a very comprehensive way. We were joined for our meeting by Ms Anett Fodor and Mr Romain Charrier, EVS volunteers in the EUSA Office. Mr Andrej Pisl, Communications and Projects Manager and our office liaison. He was present for the entire meeting and was always on hand to respond to any questions and supply useful and contextual information that we needed.

Mr Matjaz Pecovnik, EUSA Secretary General welcomed us at the beginning of the day and gave an overview of the importance of the Student Commission within the organisation and wished us a successful meeting. Mr Pisl gave a general introduction to EUSA and to the EUSA Student Commission.

In the productive meeting, the EUSA STC Digital Campaign and within the field of Media and Communications the monthly What’s Up column and Photo Competition were discussed. We will soon be launching a campaign highlighting the impact university sport has had on and continues to have on European athletes, volunteers and other people involved in sport.

EUSA STC meeting

We went on to talk about one of the most visible and successful projects, the EUSA Volunteer Program. We also received a presentation on the upcoming European University Games from STC member Mr Nikola Vincetic (CRO), who is also a member of the organising committee of EUG2016, Zagreb-Rijeka.

Special focus was given to the field of networking, both internally (cooperation with EUSA members and other Commissions within EUSA) and externally (cooperation with other organisations). On the students level, apart from good cooperation with ENGSO Youth, preparations are underway to establish cooperation with the European Students’ Union (ESU). We developed definite plans that we hope to communicate to you in the near future.

We concluded the meeting having decided on the date for our next Skype meeting. The STC is happy with the items that we decided on and look forward to interacting with the students of European university sport in many beneficial and positive ways into the future.

EUSA Student Commission is one of the oldest commissions within EUSA, and ensures the voice of the students is represented in the organisation. The Commission is currently composed by Mr Conor Traynor (IRL), Ms Katarzyna Czalej (POL), Mr Grisha Amirkhanyan (ARM), Mr Seit Demiri (SLO), Ms Anna Edes (HUN), Mr Andrey Pavlov (RUS), Mr Nikola Vincetic (CRO) and is chaired by Ms Isabella Colafrancesco (GBR). Mr Andrej Pisl (SLO) acts as the Office liaison and secretary of the commission.
