Reflecting on March as Gender Equality Month
Gender Equality Month is celebrated every year in March. It is the whole month that is dedicated to celebrating the social, political, cultural, and academic achievements of women in the world.
March as a month is important, as it serves to raise awareness against gender bias in society while having the purpose to be the month of different actions towards eradicating those biases and teaching people the indispensable role of women in society.
As it has been full of events and activities that empower women and support the action towards gender equality in all fields of life, EUSA with its Institute, also took part of the celebrations of sporting and academic achievements of women in sport through its own activities.
During March, we organised and hosted an inspiring and empowering webinar, on the topic of Women Leaders and Role Models, having as guests three remarkable and inspiring women leaders, in sport as well as in their academic careers. The webinar was a great occasion to hear successful stories of role models and encourage women and young girls to take part in sports, both as a leisure activity and as a potential professional career.
Moreover, in the frame of the Erasmus+ project Innovating Football Leadership through Practice and Policy (iFLIPP) EUSA and EUSA Institute were co-hosts of the European Leadership Training Program convened in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from March 8-11, 2023.
This training saw 40 participants, professionals, and leaders in the world of football and sports in general, mostly women and ethnic minorities, having the main goal of providing the participants with the opportunity to learn more about leadership, developing strategy, joining boards, and building personal brands. Besides the main aims, this training was a great platform for networking, sharing best practices and a room full of great examples of people that work for the gender equality in sports, movement.
Besides being organizers and hosts, EUSA also was an active participant in webinar organized by the Gender Equality Committee of the International University Sports Federation - FISU, mainly discussing on how to include and encourage more females in university sports and how to build a sustainable gender-equal environment.
Nevetheless, EUSA and its Insitute, are a long-time striver towards gender balance in sports and a believer that women’s increased involvement in sport can promote positive development in sport by providing different values, attitudes, knowledge, capabilities and experiences. In that sense EUSA, together with EUSA Inclusion & Diversity Commission have organized and participated in multiple events aimed at tackling gender inequalities in sport in the past and will continue with it, in the future.
Having said this, in the following couple of months, through EUSA insider you will be able to read interviews that members of EUSA Inclusion & Diversity Commission, will conduct with different individuals, covering topics such as gender equiality and balanse in sports, inclusion, women leadership and many other. The first one of the series of interview, you can read it here.
Women’s participation in sport has a long history, marked by division and discrimination, but also a historic path full with major accomplishments by female athletes and important advances for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, which deserve celebration and serve as a great example.
