Queens Rugby 7 Festival in France
More than 300 female players representing 16 rugby teams with diverse levels and ages coming from France, Ireland, Hungary, United Kingdom, Belgium, Andorra, Spain, Northern Ireland and Poland, participated at the Queens Rugby 7 tournament, taking place in Paris between May 13 and 15.
The event was comprised of sports end educational part, and was dedicated to women empowerment in sport, and also raising awareness about endometriosis, a gynaecological disease affecting 1 out of 10 women. The role of physical activity to prevent the disease and to improve the condition of the patients are still quite unknown to the general public.
Throughout the event several activities were offered to the public: documentaries screenings, rugby initiations, photography exhibition about women participation in sport and educational animations such as conferences focusing on mixed sport and gender equality in sport.
Celebrating the event this year is important, also due to the 100th anniversary of the organiser, the Alice Milliat Foundation, created during the 1st feminine Olympiads in Paris in 1922.
European University Sports Association (EUSA) is proud to be an associated partner of the event, co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union. EUSA was represented at the event by its Vice-President Mr Bruno Barracosa. Representants of the French University Sports Federation (FFSU) were also present at the festival. On behalf of EUSA, Mr Barracosa addressed the participants before the award ceremony, and invited the teams to join the next edition of the European Universities Rugby 7s Championship, which will be held in Lisbon in 2023.
Regarding the ranking of the university teams, Trinity College Dublin won 1st place, with Paris Science Lettres winning 2nd place, and 3rd place went to Science Politique Paris.
Gender equality and women participation in sport are topics of a great importance. Besides political support and gender equality initiatives, EUSA through its Institute currently takes part in EU funded projects with a focus on women in sport: Inclusion in Sport (iSport), Innovating Football Leadership through Practice and Policy (iFlipp) and Promoting Gender Equality in Sports (PROGRES).
