Preparations for FASU Games

Preparations for the 7th FASU Games scheduled for July 11–18, 2014 at the University of Nairobi, in Kenya are in high gear.

 

The Games are organised by Federation of African University Sports (FASU) in cooperation with the Local Organising Committe, headed by the University of Nairobi. The LOC is represented by the University Deputy Vice-Chancellor, prof. Isaac Mbeche and includes among others Kenya Universities Sports Association (KUSA), led by the Chairman, Mr Mbaabu Mureiithi and key University of Nairobi managers and staff. The LOC’s main task is to mobilize resources and sponsorship for the games and manage all the logistics related to the event.

The Games will involve university students representing different nations from Africa featuring competitions in Athletics, Basketball, Badminton, Chess, Karate, Netball, Soccer, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis and Volleyball as compulsory sports. Optional Sports include Rugby 7’s, Handball, and Taekwondo and Demonstration Sports feature Sitting Volleyball, Woodball and American Football. 

University of Nairobi

 

The games will be staged at the University of Nairobi Sports grounds with a few track events and swimming to be held at the Safaricom Kasarani Stadium. In the past months, FASU and the local organising committee checked the venues and facilities, to be used for the event.

Inspection visit of the Campus

The first edition of All Africa Universities games were held in 1974 in Accra, Ghana and the University of Nairobi hosted the 2nd in 1978. The previous, 6th edition of the Games was held in 2012 in Windhoek, Namibia.
