Portuguese University Championships

After six intense days of the Finals of Portuguese University Championships 2014, where about 2,000 athletes from 33 clubs and 132 teams took part, the outcomes could only be positive. Maia, European City of Sport for 2014, in the north of Portugal, welcomed between April 7 and 12 the biggest University Sports event held in Portugal. At this sports celebrations made by students for students, 13 National University Champions in 8 sports were selected. 

 

In women's Handball, the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria retained the title and in the male competition the University of Minho/AAUM accomplished the feat of being crowned Champion for the 6th consecutive time, among the 12 teams in the competition. This team is the current European Universities Champion, title won in 2013, in Katowice, Poland, after having already won in 2011 in Rijeka, Croatia.

In Futsal, the strongest team was University of Coimbra/AAC, winning the title of National University Champion in both genders. The female team was also European Universities Champion in 2010, winning in Zagreb, Croatia.

In female Basketball, the winner was the Polytechnic Institute of Porto, while the male Champion was the team of University of Minho/AAUM. In men's football, this team won its second consecutive title, defeating AAC in the final. With this title, the University of Minho/AAUM, awarded as Best European University in 2013, achieved 3 championships in the Finals 2014.

In the Korfball competition, the podium was occupied only by Lisbon teams, with the University of Lisbon School of Engineering/AEIST in the first place. On the other hand, the Faculty of Human Kinetics of University of Lisbon/AEFMH won in Rink Hockey.

In Rugby 7s, the female winner was the University of Porto. The same academy lost in the male final against the new Portuguese University Champion, the Nova University of Lisbon.

In turn, the female volleyball team of University of Porto Sports Faculty/AEFADEUP is the new Champion and in the male competition, Polytechnic Institute of Porto won the first place, like they did last year.

The new National University Champions will represent their universities and institutes at the 2nd European Universities Games held in Rotterdam, Netherlands this year.

During the week, the official page on Facebook surpassed 4,300 likes, with the maximum range of publications of 13,000 users and the page of CNU2014 with a maximum range of 33,000 users, per day. Eight finals of the competition were live streamed and involved more than 2,500 viewers.

 

The Finals of the Portuguese University Championships were organised by the Portuguese Academic Federation of University Sport - FADU and Academic Federation of Porto (FAP), in partnership with the City Council of Maia.
