Portuguese Parliament honours university sport

On the 24th of August, the Portuguese Parliament approved unanimously a Congratulation Vow regarding the success of the Portuguese athletes at the 27th Summer Universiade in Kazan. This vow is extended to FADU and all sports agents involved, as well as the Universities and Student Unions which the student-athletes of the Portuguese delegation in Kazan, Russia represented.

 

This vow highlights the importance given by the Portuguese Parliament to the dimension of the Universiade and recognition for their achievements, including medals won, who highlighted Portugal at the international level and shown that is possible to combine high level sports with an academic activity.

With 30 athletes, the Portuguese delegation participated in 8 different sports winning 5 medals and finishing in 31st place in the ranking of Universiade medals. Two gold medals won by Fernando Pimenta, K1 500m and K1 1000m Canoe Sprint, and two bronze medals, one by André Alves (-73 kg, Judo) and another by Marcos Caldeira (Long Jump, Athletics). Beyond the medals, the Portuguese delegation also added six Diplomas of Merit.

FADU President Bruno Barracosa noted that "The recognition given in this congratulation is undoubtedly an increased motivation in the development, promotion and implementation of sport in the Higher Education System of Portugal. The Universiade is a project that has an increasing place within the Portuguese High Performance sports, a fact of which the Secretary State of Sports and Youth (SEDJ) and the Portuguese Institute for Sports and Youth (IPDJ) are more aware and also in which the Sports Federations in Portugal are increasing their participation." He also highlighted that the "exceptional quality of the student-athletes who, together with their effort, commitment and dedication, rewarded us with excellent achievements and results in various ways." Finally, he thanked the commitment and professionalism of the Head of Delegation, Mr Pedro Dias, who contributed significantly to the team dynamics necessary to pursuing and achieving the goals.
