Portuguese Government confirms commitment to EUG 2018

Portuguese Sports and Youth Secretary of State (SEDJ) and Portuguese Science, Technology and Higher Education Secretary of State met this week with Mr Mario Santos, Secretary General of European Universities Games (EUG) Coimbra 2018, confirming their commitment and support to the event.

The first meeting took place this Monday, during the reception held by Mr Joao Paulo Rebelo (SEDJ) for the Portuguese team who competed at the Universiade 2017 in Taipei last month, winning five medals, two of them gold. During this reception, Mr Santos had the opportunity to talk to the Secretary of State, who reinforced the commitment of the Portuguese government with the EUG Coimbra 2018 and the importance of this event to value sports in Universities and dual careers.

On Tuesday, the Secretary General of EUG Coimbra 2018 had a meeting with the Secretary of State of Science, Technology and Higher Education Ms Maria Fernanda Rollo. During this meeting, the EUG’s 2018 Educational and Cultural program was additionally developed. These programs are a key part of the event, complementary to the sporting main event, aiming all participants to be aware of the importance of sports and the development of their education.

This event and its several milestones will provide open opportunity to involve students and the wariness of the importance of health–enhancing physical activity through increased participation in, and equal access to, sport for all. Both meeting were a good opportunity to assure the strong commitment the Portuguese Government has with the event, which will be held next year in Coimbra, between July 15 and 28.
