Norwegian University Games Tromso 2016

Norwegian University Games Tromso 2016

The Norwegian University Games of Tromsø 2016 delivered far beyond expected when they for the very first time in history organized the games north of the Polar circle. They are the latest edition in a proud number of Norwegian University Games, and as the ninth games they managed, as so many before them, to make the games their own in their special way.

TSI and the executive committee of the Games in Tromsø had a tough job ahead of them when they, 11 months ago began planning for the games. As pioneers in the Student Sports Club of the University of Tromsø, every task was done for the very first time. The executive committee, exclusively consisting of students between 22-26 years old, did an excellent job and nobody can deny that the games in the north were spectacular in its unique form.

Cross country

More than 1,000 students were accredited, of which 836 were athletes and 200 were volunteers. They arranged Norwegian University Championships in handball, floorball, basketball and cross country and Norwegian University Cup in underwater rugby, kayak polo, hockey, jiu jitsu, powerlifting and Yukigassen. In addition, they organized an outdoor event; Missions Tromsø.

Kayak Polo

After nine fantastic and memorable games we experience again and again that the organizers always appreciate its uniqueness of the event and these games was no exception. With Joik at the opening ceremony, Sami Eve and snowball fight in organized form (Yukigassen) we were left with little doubt that this time we were in “Paris of the North”. The University Sports challenges established forms; they are limitless and with open arms, they embrace new and exciting sports. This was quite obvious when Yukigassen was one of the most memorable championships, as we round out the games in the North. We hope and believe that this is a typical University Sport that will grow and establish it self as a regular championship every winter.

Weightlifting

We say well done to the Norwegian Univesity Games of Tromsø 2016 and are looking forward to October when The Norwegian University Games of Bergen 2016 takes over the baton and welcomes over 2,000 participants in what appears to be the biggest games ever hosted in Bergen!
