Nijmegen to host first-ever EUC Cycling in 2021
EUSA is proud to announce that the very first edition of the European Universities Cycling Championship will take place in Nijmegen, the Netherlands in 2021.
Nijmegen was initially set to host the FISU World University Cycling Championship in June this year, yet due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, this event, along with the large majority of FISU Championships, was unfortunately cancelled. Due to a congested calendar next year, a postponed World University Cycling Championship could not be organised, thus EUSA and the local Organising Committee have joined forces to organise this novel event next year.
Never before has a European Universities Cycling Championship been organised, thus this will mark a new and historic era as cycling makes its debut on the European Universities Championships programme.
The event will take place from 8 to 13 June, 2021 in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. The competition will consist of four disciplines: the individual time trial, mountain bike eliminator, mountain bike cross country and a road race.
In these difficult times, the Organising Committee aims to remain flexible and will cover all needed COVID-19 related measurements.
President of the Organising Committee Mr Joost van Wijngaarden explains: “We are proud to be given the opportunity to show the best student athletes of Europe what cycling in this beautiful area is like. With a proven roadrace course ridden by the best during the Boels Ladies Tour in 2018 and a MTB XCE course made in cooperation with former XCE World Cup classification winner Jeroen van Eck, we are confident we will be able to deliver some spectacular races.”
EUSA President Mr Adam Roczek says: “EUSA is proud to expand our rich sports programme even further with the addition of the European Universities Cycling Championship. We thank the local organisers for their commitment in ensuring this event can still be staged, and we hope this will be the first of many future successful cycling championships.”
Registrations for the event will open on December 1st. Please visit cycling2021.eusa.eu for more information.
