News from African University Sports Association
The city of Tshwane, formely known as Pretoria, Capital City of South Africa is hosted the 4th FASU Games (African University Games). The Local Organising Committee received the support form the highest regional and national authorities: the City of Tshwane, the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASSCOC), the Gauteng Province, the SASSU, The University of Pretoria as well as CUCSA. Dr Malumbete RALETHE, FISU Assessor and Honorary President of SASSU (South African Student Sports Union) was very pleased to welcome a large delegation from FISU and EUSA representatives, such as Roch CAMPANA, FISU Secretary General, Leonz EDER, Marian DYMALSKI, Sinisa JASNIC FISU Assessors, Alberto Gualtieri EUSA President, as well as Hassan CHIKH FISU Vice President and President of FASU and Shadrack ADEOTI FISU Assessor and Secretary General of FASU.
The University of Pretoria, the highest University of South Africa (34.000 students) has provided sports facilities of very standards, such as the High Performance Center, centre where all South African top athletes and teams are getting prepared for the international meetings.
15 delegations took part at the marching pass during the Opening Ceremony : ALG-ANG-BOT-CMR- GHA- LES- MAW- MOZ- NAM- SEN – SWZ – UGA- ZAM – ZIM and of course RSA. The program of competitions included 11 disciplines : athletics – badminton – basketball, chess – football – judo – karate – netball – table tennis – tennis – volleyball.
The meeting ended with the election of the new Executive Committee now composed as follows :
Hassan CHIKH (ALG) - President
Dr Malumbete RALETHE (RSA) - 1st Vice President
Dr Silvano LAMPTEY (GHA) - 2nd Vice President
Ms Lerato MKHIZE (RSA) - Secretary General
Mr Nchindo MBUKUSA (NAM) - Assistant Secretary General
Ms Penninah KABENGE (UGA) - Auditor.
