New concept for Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games
Marking the “1 year to go” mark, the FISU steering committee called an important meeting in Dusseldorf to present the newly developed concept of the Rhine Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Summer Games.
Important delegation from FISU travelled to Dussoldorf to hold the Steering Committee Meeting and were welcomed by the President of German University Sports Federation, Mr Joerg Forster and CEO of Rhine Ruhr 2025 FISU Summer Games Organising Committee, Mr Niklas Borger.
The world’s largest multi-sport event, Rhine Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Summer Games, will take place from 16-27 of July 2025. These FISU Games will present an opportunity for Germany to set new standards for sustainability, inclusion, and human-rights compliance in the organisation of major sporting events.
Due to recent inflation, happening after the summer games budget agreement in 2019, the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU event concept needed adjustment to stay on track for next year. This new concept, presented by the Rhine Ruhr 2025 Games Organising Committee, layed out a more compact event that will ensure that the games go ahead within the required financial framework.
The new structure guarantees all 18 sports and planned entertainment elements can be delivered. The Games will now take place over a smaller area, in the heart of North-Rhine Westphalia. This new concept consolidates venues and uses strong regional synergies to shorten travel routes.
The majority of the events and competitions will take place in the cities of Bochum, Duisburg, Esen and Mulheim an der Ruhr. Dusseldorf will no longer be a venue of the FISU World University Games but will still be used to host the FISU family accommodation, the Welcome Center and the Organising Committee Head Office. By aligning the four host cities, the 2025 World University Games can happen without sacrificing the quality of the games.
New detailed information about the event is expected to be released in the following days by the Organising Committee.
In other FISU news, the FISU Torino 2025 games have released their medals and artwork designs for their games taking place from 13-23 January 2025. The medals were designed by Matilda Elia, a student from the Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti and posters created by duo Van Orton Design.
These designs were presented by the Organising Committee, celebrating the collaboration with the Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti for the design of the gold, silver and bronze medals. The students of the Foundry Techniques course at the Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti Torino, worked on two concepts, Sport and the Organising Committee’s special initiative, SPRINT generation.
The creative development of the sports medals involved the concepts of “Turin city of the Alps, metro mountain”. The design competition also required graphic elements focusing on the concept of “Piemonte as a hub and network of innovation, from food to aerospace”.
Matilda Elia was unanimously selected by the committee amongst her finalist competitors, Daniela Iovino and Pietro Monfalcone, for both designs of the Sport and SPRINT Generation medals.
A quote from Salvo Bitonti, Director of Albertine Academy after the selection of the winner - “Once again, the Albertina expresses the excellence of its students and teaching staff with the design of the medals for the Torino 2025 FISU World University Games, an event of the highest level, just as internationalisation is one of the primary objectives of our artistic institution, whose intense activity of artistic experimentation and research has long been known outside the borders of Europe”.
Our EUSA Miskolc-Debrecen 2024 European University Games this summer, will host two informative sessions for the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU Summer Games. These will take place in host cities Debrecen and Miskolc on 22 July and 23 July.
