The Organising Committee of the European Universities Games Coimbra 2018 (EUG2018) announced in April the official mascot of the event. DUC is an owl that was created by University of Coimbra's Image, Media and Communication Project.

DUC, the owl, it's the interpretation of a symbol of the Greek mythology that is present on University of Coimbra (UC) insignia - "The Owl of Minerva", that represents knowledge, wisdom, perspicacity and erudition, and it can be seen on the University Tower when seen from University Stadium of Coimbra.



The name DUC is an acronym of "Desporto Universitário em Coimbra" (University Sport in Coimbra) and was created after analysing several proposals from SASUC's kindergarten students. Its first appearance was in Aveiro (Portugal), during the Final Phase of the National Universities Championships.

The European Universities Games will gather over 4,000 participants from Europe’s leading sport universities, competing in 13 sports between July 15 and 28, 2018. The Games will also be accompanied by the Rector's Conference and series of other educational and cultural events.
