LSSA in Lithuania celebrates 25th anniversary

The 25th anniversary of the Lithuanian Student Sport Association (LSSA) was commemorated with a special Gala on December 3 at the Kaunas National Drama Theatre, where the top Lithuanian student athletes of the year 2015 were also honoured.

Honourable guests took part in the event, including the President of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) Mr Oleg Matytsin, President of European University Sports Association (EUSA) Mr Adam Roczek. Present were also the President of the Finnish Student Sports Federation (OLL) Mr Matio Vanios, OLL Secretary General and member of the FISU Executive Committee Mrs  Hillka Laitinen, President of the Estonian Student Sport Association (EASL) Mr Ants Veetousme, President of the Latvian Student Sports Federation (LASS) Mrs Agita Abelė, Minister’s adviser in the Government of the Republic of Lithuania Mr Vytautas Janušaitis, Vice Minister of the Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania Mr Rolandas Zuoza, Managing Director of the Department of Physical Education and Sport Mr Edis Urbonvičius, and other prominent guests.

EUSA recognition to LSSA for 25th anniversary

At the occasion, EUSA President Mr Roczek presented a special commemorative plaquette to Mr Ceslovas Garbaliauskas, LSSA President.

In 1993 LSSA became a member of FISU and in 1999 a member of EUSA. In 1997 LSSA helped restore the SELL (Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) student games, which had been popular before the war, together with the Finnish, Estonian and Latvian Student Sports Associations.

Impressive victories of the Lithuanian students in the global universiades have been achieved. During the entire independence period our students have won 47 medals (19 gold, 11 silver and 17 bronze). During the entire Soviet period our students won 27 medals (12 gold, 12 silver and 3 bronze).

The Gala was also an occassion for the awards

Lithuanian students have maintained strong positions among the second top ten universities of the world in more than 160 world countries for the third summer universiade in sequence already (2011, 2013 and 2015). Lithuanian students have also participated in both editions of the European Universities Games so far: in Cordoba, Spain in 2012, and in Rotterdam, the Netherlands in 2014, also returning home with medals of various colours from both events.
