July 23 brings European Universities Champions in Golf and Table Tennis

Saturday, July 23, brought new champions in Golf and Table Tennis at the European Universities Games 2016.

Golf competitions, which started on July 20, offered top conditions for university golf players from all around Europe. On the second day, Ivan Vucemil of University of Zagreb (CRO) broke the course record with a stunning 65 strikes (par -7).

Medallists in Men's team competitions were University of Stirling (GBR) bringing home gold, with University of Ulster (IRL) silver and Technical University of Munich (GER) bronze. Special awards - Best Net and Longest shot: James Lindsay, University of Ulster (IRL); Nearest shot: Luka Braz, University of Ljubljana (SLO).

Medallists in golf

In Women's category, the podium was completely dominated by the students from United Kingdom; University of Stirling (GBR) adding to the  success of their male colleagues, with University of St. Andrews (GBR) second and University of Exeter (GBR) third place. Recipients of special awards were for the Longest shot Jennifer Saxton, University of Stirling (GBR) and Nearest shot Josephine Farrando, University Pantheon-Assas Paris 2 (FRA).

Medal presenters

Medals and awards were presented by the Rector of the University of Zagreb Mr Damis Boras, EUSA Executive Committee Member Mr Bill Thompson, and Organising Committee Technical Delegate for Golf Mr Jura Car.

Table Tennis this year marked record participation, with 26 men's and 18 women's teams. As already reported, Table Tennis was also one of the sports where competitions for students with disabilities were introduced.

Table Tennis Doubles

After the team competitions, the doubles and singles events concluded the table tennis events of the Games. Champions' titles were won by Ilia Shamin and Pavel Pulnyy, Russian State University for the Humanities (RUS) in men's doubles and Gencay Menge, Marmara University (TUR) in men's singles. In women's category, Magdalena Sikorska and Natalia Bak, Kozminski University (POL) won the title in doubles, with Sikorska also winning the champion's title in singles.

Table Tennis Doubles

The medal awards ceremony was carried out together with the abled students category, presented by Mr John Petersson, President of the European Paralympic Committee, Mr Ratko Kovacic, Vice-President of the European Paralympic Committee and President of the Croatian Paralympic Committee, Mrs Mirjana Hruskar, Vice-Rector of the University of Zagreb, Mr Kemal Tamer, EUSA Vice-President and Mr Andrzej Hrehorowicz, EUSA technical delegate for table tennis.

Basketball 3x3

While some competitions ended in Zagreb, in Rijeka four sports just started today - Basketball 3x3, Judo, Taekwondo, Swimming (including para swimming).
