July 19: Football glory for Minho and Montpellier

 

Tuesday July 19 has been dedicated to the football finals in Zagreb. 

 

In the men’s tournament, the race for medal started by the 3rd place match between Kuban State University (RUS) and the University J.J.Strossmayera of Osijek (CRO). The Russian team clinched the bronze medal after a 3-0 win over the local team. 

In the final, opposing University of Minho (POR) and University of Bochum (GER), in front of a cheerful crowd split between both sides, the University of Minho claimed the title after scoring the second goal (2-1) in the last five minutes of a high quality match.

The fair play award went to the joyful Erasmus University Rotterdam (NED).

 

Jonas ERMES from the University of Bochum (GER) was elected best goalkeeper, Alvaro CRUZ LAGO (University of Almeria - ESP) best scorer and Alberto ALBURQUERQUE REUS (Camilo Jose Cela University - ESP) took home the most valuable player award. 

 

 

Awards were presented by Damir Boras, rector of the University of Zagreb, Milan Čolić, representative of the city of Zagreb, Damir Stipković, technical delegate from the organizing committee, Tom Kačinari, vice president of Zagreb county football association, Jean-Francois Sautereau, EUSA executive committee member, Andreas Demetriou, Assistant technical delegate football

 

 

Men’s football medallists:

1 - University of Minho (POR)

2 - University of Bochum (GER)

3 - Kuban State University (RUS)

 

In the women’s tournament, the bronze medal was taken by the University of Marburg (GER) against the Ural Federal University (RUS) (2-1)

The fate of the fina was quickly decided as the French team from the University of Montpellier (FRA) started impressively and scored 4 goals in the first half. Their opponent, the University of Valencia (ESP) put up a good fight but was unable to catch up and had to settle for silver (4-0)

 

With 11 goals, best scorer award went to Valerie Gauvin from Montpellier (FRA). Another French University, the University of Caen (FRA) was awarded the fair-play trophy. The goal keeper of the winning team was elected best goalkeeper of the competition.
