July 18: Basketball, Tennis and Handball conclude

Monday was a day of yellow and orange balls in Zagreb as both tennis and basketball concluded after hard fought finals.

In the men’s basketball tournament, the bronze medal was claimed by Fatih University (TUR) against Vern University of Applied Science (CRO).

The final saw the victory of Vytautas Magnus University (LTU) over the local University of Zagreb (CRO).

In the women’s tournament, the bronze medal match opposed the University of Bologna (ITA) to the University of Belgrade (SRB), the later clinching the medal.

The local team of the University of Zagreb (CRO) made it to the final against the University “1 Decembrie 1918” Alba Iulia (ROU)...and won the title with a comfortable margin (75-50).

The Women’s Fair Play award went to the University of Goettingen (GER) whom we already met when they arrived at the Games as they were very active to share they joyful preparation through social media. The Most Valuable Player award went to Ruzica Dzankic from the University of Zagreb (CRO).

The Men’s Fair Play trophy was awarded to the University of Wurzburg (GER) while Marius Valukonis from the Vytautas Magnus University (LTU) was elected Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

Medals and trophies were presented by Mr. Panos Razis, EUSA Executive Committee member, Mr. Peter George, Technical delegate for basketball, Mr. Pascale Weiwers, Assistant technical delegate for basketball.

The tennis finals took two very different turns. In the women’s team final, the University of Coimbra quickly secured gold in two matches over the University of Mainz (GER), while the University of Bordeaux (FRA) clinched bronze.

The men’s team final was more like a marathon. From 3pm to 9pm, the University of Innsbruck (AUT) and the Erasmus University of Rotterdam (NED) fought in 3 matches, changed courts when the night came and had to stop because of the rain. Eventually, the Dutch team claimed the gold medal and the podium was completed by students from Kozminski University (POL).

Medals were awarded by Mr. Gordan Kozulj, vice president of the organizing committee, Mr. Kemal Tamer, EUSA vice president and Mrs. Anastasia Tsouroufli, Assistant technical delegate for tennis.

In Rijeka, six days packed with exciting matches ended with the final of the Handball competition for both Women’s and Men’s Teams.

The Mens competition was dominated by University of Nis (SRB) who did not lose any match, but had a strong opponent in German Sports University Cologne (GER). University of Minho (POR) took a win and bronze medal as finish for their participation at the European Universities Games. Nemanja Zivkovic of University of Nis (SRB) was awarded Most Valuable Player, University of Littoral Coast (FRA) received the Fair Play award. Mr Pero Lucin, Rector of the University of Rijeka, Mr Ceslovas Garbaliauskas, EUSA Competition Commission Chair, and Mrs Carmen Manchado, EUSA Assistant Technical Delegate Handball presented the awards and medals.

The Teams of both Host Cities of the European Universities Games 2016 could make it to the final of the Womens competition. University of Zagreb (CRO) took the silver medal after losing the semi final against the Runner-up Lithuanian Sports University (LTU). University of Rijeka (CRO) used the home crowd advantage to win gold. Inesa Verbovik (LTU) received the award of Most Valuable Player and the German Sports University of Cologne (GER) was awarded the Fair Play Trophy.

Awards and Medals were presented by Mr Vojko Obersnel, Mayor of the City of Rijeka, Mr Haris Pavletic, Vice President of the European Universities Sports Associations (EUSA) and the European Universities Games 2016, and Mr Arie Rosenzweig, EUSA Supervision Commission Chair.
