July 15: Conclusion of chess and progression of other sports

After five days of fighting with kings and pawns, the chess tournament at the European Universities games got its champions. Men and women played separately, clocks set to 25 minutes, and also a blitz tournament was organised. Five grandmasters participated in the men’s competition and one in women's.

In the men’s team tournament, the competition was dominated by students from the Armenian State Institute of Physical Culture (ARM) and of the Ural State Mining University (RUS) coming in on second place, with the University of Belgrade (SRB) on third place.

The women’s team competition saw the domination of the University of Belgrade (SRB) and the Ural State Mining University (RUS), followed by the students from the University of Ljubljana (SLO).

Awarding ceremony

Best individuals were in the women’s tournament Adela Velikic from the University of Belgrade (SRB), who won seven matches, drawing only one; and in the men's tournament Gabuzyan Hovhannes from the Armenian State Institute of Physical Culture (ARM). Blitz Tournament winner was Andriasian Zaven from the Armenian State Institute of Physical Culture (ARM) in men's and Travkina Anastasia from the Ural State Mining University (RUS) in women's category.

Medallists

The medal awarding ceremony in chess was held on July 15. Medals were presented by Mr Adam Roczek, EUSA President, Mrs Ivana Ertlova, Chair of the EUSA Technical Commission and member of the EUSA Executive Committee, Mr Oleksandr Sulypa, EUSA technical delegate, Mr Alojzije Jankovic, Organising Committee’s technical delegate and his assistant Mr Vid Brzica. The chess event in Zagreb was also fully supported by the European Chess Union (ECU).

Tennis

In other sports at the European Universities Games, Tennis, Football and Basketball in Zagreb with Handball and Waterpolo in Rijeka are following their way through the group stage.

While the campus in Zagreb got a lot more quiet with the departure of Rowing, Rugby 7s and Karate teams, the Games welcome the arrival of numerous futsal teams, a very popular sport among students.

Meeting EUSA, ESU and ENGSO Youth

The European University Sports Association (EUSA) does not remain idle off the field either. Yesterday was also the opportunity for EUSA to meet with the Chair of ESU (European Students’ Union) Ms Lea Meister and ENGSO Youth (European Non-Governmental Sports Organisation) Mr Paolo Emilio Adami, to discuss possibilities of future cooperation on strategic, as well as projects level.
