July 14: the Games running at full speed

Competitions at the European Universities Games continued in no less than 9 sports yesterday in Zagreb and Rijeka. Basketball, Chess, Football, Karate, Rowing, Rugby 7s and Tennis were in Zagreb while Water Polo and Handball continued in Rijeka.

We witnessed the conclusion of Karate, Rowing and Rugby 7s with their finals being held and medals awarded. Between them, university students from more than 10 countries stepped on the winner's podiums.

To the delight of the supporters, both Rugby 7s finals saw very different playing styles. The University of Gloucestershire (GBR) and the University of Paris 13 (FRA) competed in the women's tournament, and the Georgian National University (GEO) against Nova University of Lisbon (POR) in the men’s tournament.

Paris closely defeated Gloucestershire (19-17) while the Georgian National University won by a more comfortable margin against Lisbon (26-12).

Jarun lake, hosted the rowing regatta this summer and hosted the World University Games regatta in 1987. The venue was much praised by the athletes for its quality and amenities.

The prestigious women's eights (W8+) race was won by Oxford Brookes University (GBR) and the men’s eights (M8+) by Szechenyi Istvan University (HUN) featuring current European champions.

The Karate competition offered an opportunity for some home pride as the University of Zagreb (CRO) won the final team ranking in the men’s tournament; their female peers settled for the silver medal, with their competitors of Matej Bel University (SVK) to take first place and pride of place atop the podium.

Some well deserved celebration awaited the athletes in the evening before the first one start departing home.

Mental training

The first workshop held by Mental Training ‘Heart believes, mind achieves – psychological approach’, held on Wednesday 13 July at the EUG headquarters in Zagreb, is the first of several Masterclasses where athletes can learn about different techniques and tools which will help them achieve their full potential.
