International Human Rights Day 2023
Today, December 10, is International Human Rights Day, as well as the 75th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights.
In 2023, this day is commemorated under the global theme “Freedom, Equality and Justice for All” and it coincides also with the 30th anniversary of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
For 75 years the Universal Declaration of Human Rights has been infused in the societies equality, fundamental freedom and justice. This document proclaims the basic human rights to which everyone is entitled, regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.
This year for the 75th anniversary of the Declaration, a milestone celebration is commemorated, called Human Rights 75 (HR 75). The main emphasis is put on to increase knowledge on the universality and indivisibility of human rights, especially among young people, inspire people to create a movement of shared humanity while empowering them to fight for their rights and take action.
EUSA constantly strives to promote and protect all human rights through several projects and initiatives conducted by the association, alongside various partner organisations, especially with the two ongoing projects, Inclusion in Sport (iSport) and Youth Integrity Ambassadors Programme (YIAP).
EUSA embraces diversity, focusing on social responsibility topics such as safeguarding, equal opportunities and inclusion, while also running a development programme to support member organisations to be active in European activities.
Since 2017, EUSA has been an official member of the Council of Europe, the continent’s leading human rights organisation. This year’s International Human Rights Day is especially poignant considering the Council of Europe is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights, one of the most important international treaties and the cornerstone of all activities the Council is involved in.
EUSA helps promote diversity, inclusion and participation through its events, activities, and projects. We are proud to be able to offer all our sports events to male and female students, without any discrimination on political, religious, racial grounds or other personal circumstances. We are especially proud to open our events to students with disabilities, with the principle of inclusion and integration.
