The Erasmus+-funded project Green Sports Hub Europe (GSHE), of which the European University Sports Association Institute is a partner, has launched a survey which participants from all walks of life are encouraged to partake in.

The (GSHE) project, led by the Association of Cities and Regions for sustainable Resource management, the European Volleyball Confederation, Surfrider Foundation Europe, and in collaboration with more than 15 partners, looks into ways in which the sports sector can become more environmentally sustainable and aims to tackle the knowledge gap existing within the sport sector.

The potential of sport in addressing wider issues such as health, the economy and social inclusion are widely recognised by many organisations around the world and European institutions in particular. Yet the sector is facing challenges to unlock its potential through good governance, integrity and in modernising its approach to sustainable practice.

There is an increasing realisation in Europe of the impact of sport on environmental issues, the need for sport to “up its game” in terms of its environmental performance and to harness the potential for sport in using its high-profile platform to drive the agenda towards environmental action.

As part of the GSHE project’s activities, a 2021 survey on existing barriers in sport and sustainability has been launched which aims to gather first-hand information about sport and sustainability from people and structures directly involved in the sport sector.



People from all walks of life are invited to complete this survey, including the general public, sports participants, scientists and researchers, NGO staff, government officials, and those supplying the sport sector. The survey is available in English, French, Portuguese, Norwegian and Slovenian, and takes approximately 8 to 10 minutes to complete.

By sharing your experiences, observations, and opinions, you can support the transformation of the sport sector towards a more sustainable future. The survey has been designed to generate new knowledge and highlight existing barriers and issues encountered by structures and actors of the sport industry. The consortium will use the information gathered to create tailored-made supporting tools for the sport structures whilst drafting recommendations to advocate policy makers and governing bodies for a greater support towards sustainable sport practice.

The survey will remain open until the end of September. The results will be summarised in a short report, which will be sent to all interested survey participants, and will also feed into a larger report on existing barriers and opportunities on the question of sport and sustainability, while the full survey results and analysis will be made available later in the year.
