General Assembly of the Swiss University Sport Federation 2015

The Swiss University Sport Federation (SUSF) participated at the 2nd European Universities Games 2014 in Rotterdam with 154 student athletes, 20 coaches and officials plus 5 referees, composed from 13 University teams. The Swiss teams won 12 medals in total, including 9 medals in rowing, 2 in volleyball and 1 in basketball. The ETH Zurich was ranked 2nd in the overall medal ranking. This performance was the best ever for Swiss teams at EUSA events. Leonz Eder, CEO of SUSF, presented the EUC/EUG report on behalf of Daniel Studer and underlined also the fact that Switzerland will host two EUC in 2015, namely Table Tennis in Geneva and Golf in St. Gallen.

Under the leadership of Leonz Eder – President Andreas Csonka was absent due to family medical issues – the delegates from most of the National University Sports Organizations accepted the annual report, the report of the treasurer and also the budget 2015. In close cooperation with Swiss Olympic Association SUSF started a new project for the better coordination of studies and elite sport. A new part time job was created in order to evaluate all the possibilities for the students at Swiss Universities to better combine their academic needs with the goals of their sport career. First results are expected to be presented in the running year.

 

Presentation of Financial Report

 

2014 was not only a successful EUG year for the SUSF, but also related to FISU events. Swiss student athletes won 14 medals at WUC, namely in Orienteering, Cycling and Floorball. SUSF again organized a WUC in 2014, Golf in Crans-Montana. Secretary General Guy Praplan presented his final report and was awarded with a special prize, together with OC President Pierre Bruchez. HoD Fredi Schneider presented the success of the Swiss team at the Winter Universiade in Strbské Pleso and Granada. The 4th place in the medal ranking is the best result ever for Swiss teams at Winter Universiades.

 

WUC Orienteering Team

 

HoD Renato Maggi showed a preview to the Summer Universiade in Gwangju where SUSF will participate with the biggest delegation ever, including team sports Handball, Basketball, Volleyball women and men, approximately 180 athletes and officials. The delegates also accepted to participate at the Universiades 2017, namely in Almaty and Taipei. Finally, Leonz Eder presented a progress report of the bid of Lucerne-Central Switzerland for the Winter Universiade 2021. The final decision by the political bodies of the 6 cantons concerned, namely Lucerne, Zug, Schwyz, Uri, Obwalden and Nidwalden, will be taken on May 7.

 

HoD with Delegates

 

Besides of the statutary topics the best student athletes of the year 2014 were honored and awarded. The winner of the Swiss Student Sports Award was Matthias Kyburz who won four medals at the World University Orienteering Championship 2014, namely 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal. The whole Orienteering team with HoD Roland Schütz received gifts from Marilen Matter Graf, Head of SUSF Elite sports, for their outstanding performances. The SUSF awarded other prizes to the cycling and floorball teams, both medal winners at the WUC 2014.
