Gala in POR honours University Sport
The 15th Portuguese Sports Gala took place on November 16th at the Estoril Casino near Cascais. The organiser, Portugal Sports Confederation (CDP), brought together athletes, coaches, officials and institutions linked to the national sports movement. The Portuguese Academic Federation of University Sports (FADU), member of CDP, was also a part of the event.
The year of the 100 Years Celebration of the Portuguese Republic set the tone for the tribute One Hundred Athletes, One Hundred Years of the Republic.
Connected to the University Sports, the following people received the honours: Dr. Armando Rocha, Orlando Duarte, Tomáz Morais, Nelson Évora, Alexandre Yokochi, Carla Sacramento, Naide Gomes, Ticha Penicheiro and Nuno Delgado.
In the honours awarded to International Champions in 2010, the following received the award for the results at University level:
Sara Moreira - World University Champion Cross Country
University National Team Rugby Sevens - World University Champion
Pedro Póvoa - European University Champion Taekwondo -58 Kg
The highlight of the evening was the awards ceremony Sportsmen of the Year in categories Coach, Female Athlete, Male Athlete, Promise Athlete and Team, for which only five were named finalists in each category on a universe of more than 70 sports federations. University sports had a strong presence in all five categories, and the title of Best Coach went to Tomáz Morais (University Sports / Rugby - Sevens World University Champion in 2010).
