Further cancellations in FISU WUC programme

Further cancellations in FISU WUC programme

In keeping with safety measures being taken around the world to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, FISU have made the difficult decision to cancel a further five World University Championships this year.

Sport around the world has been severely affected the global pandemic, with numerous sports events either cancelled or postponed as a result, including the fifth edition of the European Universities Games, which will now take place in July 2021.

With all FISU World University Championships cancelled up until September, the world university sport governing body has now taken the decision to cancel a further five events up until mid-October, having continuously monitored the global situation regarding the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic and consulted with the various local organising committees.

The five events to have been called off include:

• Rugby Sevens from 17 to 19 September in La Plata, Argentina

• Sport Climbing from 17 to 20 September in Turin, Italy

• Cheerleading from 24 to 26 September in Wonju, South Korea

• Waterski and Wakeboard from 24 to 27 September in Dnipro, Ukraine

• Boxing from 10 to 15 October in Katowice, Poland

This leaves just four World University Championships left on the initial schedule which could still take place, yet confirmation will be given at a later date.

“Many countries are still facing a challenging situation due to COVID-19 and a second wave has been declared in some places,” FISU Secretary General and CEO Mr Eric Saintrond wrote in a communication to the FISU member federations. “FISU keeps closely monitoring the evolving situation and its impact on our events. Our top priority remains the safety of all participants.

“Although we regret to announce these additional cancellations, the updates on the pandemic show us that the crisis has not been overcome yet. And therefore, we must take the most cautious decision about our events.”
