FISU World Cup dates confirmed
The International University Sports Federation (FISU) has confirmed the dates for three FISU University World Cup events, with Rugby Sevens set to feature for the first time in this format.
A more recent introduction following the success of FISU’s World University Games and World University Championships, the FISU University World Cups are stand-alone events where, similar to EUSA events, competitors take part in the colours of their universities as opposed to their countries.
With global sport affected by the current COVID-19 pandemic, FISU made the decision to postpone several competitions this year, but have now confirmed the dates for the FISU University World Cup 3x3 Basketball, FISU University World Cup Football as well as an all-new FISU World University World Cup Rugby Sevens.
The sixth edition of the FISU University World Cup 3x3 Basketball will once again take place in Xiamen, China – which has hosted this event since the first edition in 2015 – from October 14-17, 2021, while the FISU University World Cup Football tournament will take place from May 18-29, 2022 in Jinjiang, China.
Originally scheduled to take place in 2021, the World Cup Football event has been postponed by a year to allow qualifying tournaments to be held between May and October 2021.
The maiden FISU University World Cup Rugby Sevens tournament is scheduled to take place in Kazan, Russia from August 12-14, 2022. Rugby Sevens is becoming an increasingly popular sport among student-athletes worldwide, with FISU having already hosted eight Rugby Sevens Championships, with the sport featuring in two World University Games as well, including the most recent edition in Napoli 2019.
The 3x3 Basketball World Cup will feature sixteen male and sixteen female teams, while the Football World Cup will include sixteen male and eight female teams. Eight male and eight female teams are scheduled to participate in the inaugural Rugby Sevens World Cup.
The exact dates for continental qualifying tournaments will be confirmed after consultation with Continental University Sport Federations in the upcoming weeks.
Meanwhile, the last FISU sporting event of 2021, the World University Mind Sport Championship, will now take place online from October 26-30. Originally scheduled to take place in Bydgoszcz, Poland, the event will now allow Chess and Bridge players from across the world to compete in an online competition from home.
Registrations for the event close on Sunday, October 11. National University Sports Associations can enter their teams on the FISU Online Accreditation System HERE.
