FISU’s 3x3 World Cup postponed to 2021

FISU’s 3x3 World Cup postponed to 2021

The International University Sports Federation (FISU) and the local organising committee of the 2020 FISU University World Cup 3x3 have decided to postpone this year’s edition of the tournament until 2021.

The tournament was originally scheduled to take place in Xiamen, People’s Republic of China, from 26-29 November this year.

The FISU Steering Committee approved the postponement after a meeting on April 17 following numerous discussions between FISU and the local organising committee.

“As you know, the selection of teams for the University World Cup is done on the basis of continental Qualification Tournaments, which are organised by our Continental University Sports Federations,” FISU Secretary General-CEO Mr Eric Saintrond stated in a letter to the federation's member associations.

“The qualification tournaments normally take place during the Continental Games or Continental Championships. Unfortunately in 2020, the continental federations are unable to organise their Games or Championships due to the global COVID-19 situation. Hence, this does not allow us to select the teams for the world finals of the FISU University World Cup 3x3 this year.”

Xiamen will again host the 2021 tournament, have organised FISU’s World Cup 3x3 since 2015, with the event set to take place over the same period next year, with the exact dates set to be confirmed at a later stage.

FISU have so far cancelled all events until August this year amid the current COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic.
