FISU meets in Brussels and attributes 2027 Games
Executive Committee of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) held its meeting on November 11 and 12 in Brussels, Belgium.
One of the main decisions taken was the attribution of the summer edition of the 2027 FISU World University Games. Chungcheong Megacity (Republic of Korea) and North Carolina (United States of America) were competing to host the event. Both bidding teams make their final presentation before the report of the Evaluation Committee and the vote of the Executive Committee.
Both candidates submitted very strong proposals and FISU’s visits to both potential hosts revealed excellent facilities, widespread support and cultures of university sport excellence. In the end, the FISU Executive Committee awarded the 2027 FISU World University Games to Chungcheong, where 18 sports will be hosted across 31 venues. The candidacy demonstrated a carefully-considered approach to legacy that has already seen the facilities of the Gwangju 2015 FISU World University Games become widely used and appreciated.
Apart of the bidding presentations, also the Organising Committees of Torino 2025 FISU World University Games Winter and Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games Summer were present at the meeting, sharing their preparations. Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games’ Organising Committee under which conditions the event already postponed in 2021 and 2022 will be held in Summer 2023.
FISU Executive Committee’s members have decided to change the current format of the FISU University World Cups and run them like FISU World University Championships. Only 3x3 Basketball and Football will continue to be FISU University World Cups.
Executive Committee members also appointed Mrs Sarah Lewis as Deputy Secretary General as of 1 January 2023. The former British skier who competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, has worked as Secretary General of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) for 20 years.
