FISU-FASU-NUSF Strategic Dialogue a great success
The FASU General Assembly and 3rd FISU-FASU-NUSF Strategic Dialogue, held in a hybrid format, took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on March 26 and 27, with positive discussions held regarding university sport in Africa and beyond.
Under the title “university sports in a changing world,” the event included speakers from FISU, FASU, National University Sports Federations (NUSFs) as well as students.
Following introductory addresses from FASU First Vice President and Chairperson of the Committee for Education and Development of University Sports Mr Daouda Sidibe, FISU Acting President Mr Leonz Eder and FASU President Ms Nomsa Mahlangu, the first morning’s session kicked off with an informational presentation about FISU’s current educational activities made by FISU Director of Education and Development Ms Lilia Barieva, with focus given to the FISU Healthy Campus initiative, where three of the 66 universities registered across the globe situated in Africa.
FASU Administrator Mr Hannington Musoke then delivered a presentation about FASU and the association’s mission, vision and structure, before FISU Student Ambassador and member of the FISU Student Committee and FISU Media and Communication Committee Ms Mercy Lakisa spoke about where students sit in all aspects of university sport.
FASU Secretary General and FISU Vice President Ms Peninnah Aligawesa then delivered a report from the FISU-FASU-NUSF Seminar which took place in December 2020, following which a panel discussion took place to discuss the outcomes from the seminar and how the COVID-19 pandemic affected university sport activities across the continent.
Day two commenced with Mr Bezabih Wolde from the University of Addis Ababa and Treasurer of the Ethiopian Olympic Committee discussing increased participation and higher performance of university student-athletes with the use of technology, before several presentation were given regarding future FASU events including the tenth FASU Games and several championships scheduled to take place across Africa this year.
FISU Acting President Mr Eder then brought the two-day event to a close, expressing his appreciation to FASU and NUSFs for hosting the event and their continual commitment and hard work.
The next Strategic Dialogue involving FISU, FASU and NUSF will be in 2023, where even more fruitful discussions about university sport in Africa are expected to be held.
