FISU Executive Committee meets in Chengdu

On July 26-27, just before the opening of the Chengdu FISU Games, the Executive Committee of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) held their meeting in Chengdu.

The meeting focused on the organisation’s flagship events – FISU World University Games. Representatives of the Organising Committees of the current event, as well as upcoming events: Torino 2025, Rhine-Ruhr 2025 and Chungcheong 2027 presented their progress and plans. At the same time, the final report of the Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games was presented.

The current edition of the FISU Games was initially planned to be held in 2021, but was postponed due to Covid-19 to 2023. Student athletes from all over the world will be able to compete in 18 sports. The event hosts also programmes like FISU-AIPS Young Reporters, World University Games Museum, Chengdu FISU World Conference under the title University Sports: Embracing a colourful world.

After Chengdu, the next stop on the FISU Games’ road will be Turin. The Piedmont capital will host the Winter edition of the Games from 13 to 23 January 2025, featuring 9 core sports. Turin (Torino in Italian) already hosted the winter edition of Universiade in 2007, the year after the city had staged the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. The next Summer edition of the Games will be hosted in Rhine-Ruhr in 2025; both events to be held in Europe.

Another highlight of the EC meeting was the signature of a Memory of Understandings between FISU and the Chengdu Sports University (CDSU) to build the International University Sports Culture Exchange Center. Members of the Executive Committee also paid tribute to the late long-time former FISU Secretary General Mr Roch Campana, confirmed plans for the FISU General Assembly, and listened to the reports of the FISU Commissions.
