FISU EC meets in Gwangju
The city of Gwangju, Republic of Korea, hosted the meeting of the Executive Committee of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) on October 16 and 17, 2014.
After approval of the minutes of the previous EC meeting in May, FISU President Claude-Louis Gallien presented his report and sought the approval of the members to continue the reform of statutes and regulations of FISU which started three years ago. The proposals focus on the number and composition of committees; to be ratified by the FISU General Assembly which will be held in November next year in Lausanne.
FISU Treasurer Bayasgalan Danzadorj then presented his report, taking into account global economic situation and its implications on the finances of the organisation. FISU Secretary General gave an update of the past and future events of FISU and on the daily management of the Secretariat. He noted the intentions of candidates to host our future Winter and Summer Universiades as well as special events initiated by FISU.
Led by its President, Mr. Kim Hwang-sik, who was also Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea, the delegation representing the Organising Committee of the Universiade Gwangju 2015 gave a detailed report on the 28th Summer Universiade. All aspects of the Universiade were addressed, as well as the FISU Conference with the main theme ‘The impact of University Sport on the Global Community’.
The first-day session concluded with reports by three committee chairs, starting with Mrs Alison Odell. She presented the Education Committee, emphasizing the excellent preparation of future educational events: The 2015 Conference and 2016 Forum. Mrs Odell also revealed the names of three students selected for the scholarship programme of FISU/Daegu Scholarship programme: Natalie Good (NZL), Anabel Vose (GBR) and Joshua Cheptegi (UGA).
Mrs Rosaura Mendez, Chair of the Committee for Gender Equality, congratulated FISU’s participation at the 6th World Conference of the International Working Group on Women and Sport. Mrs Mendez also gave an indication of the upcoming events organized by the Committee at the Gwangju Universiade. Finally, Mr Stefan Bergh presented the report of the Committee for the Development of University Sport (CDSU) informing about the participation of FISU in the general assemblies of the continental federations as well as the projects of the member federations, supported by FISU.
On the second-day Mrs Verena Burk, Chair of the Media and Communication Committee (CMC), opened the debate, presenting the report of the CMC, giving an update of the Young Reporters’ Programme and plans to maximize FISU presence on social networks. Mr Dejan Susovic, FISU Media Director gave a detailed presentation of the progress on the television coverage of the FISU events. The floor was then given to Dr. Lawrence Rink, Chair of the International Medical Committee, to present to the EC the work of his committee relating to the Universiades and necessary precautions plans.
Delegates of the Organising Committee of the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei City then took the floor, followed by the delegation from Brasilia 2019. Winter Universiades were the next point on the agenda, starting with Granada, host of the 27th Winter Universiade in 2015, being supported by Slovakia (Strbske Pleso and Osrblie); followed by 2017 Winter Games Almaty and 2019 Winter Universiade Krasnoyarsk.
The Department of World University Championships gave an update of the events of 2014, participation statistics, media coverage as well as an internal evaluation of the events so far. An update of the World University Championships in 2016 was also presented.
