Final meeting of the FISU Executive Committee in 2021
The International University Sports Federation (FISU) held their last meeting of the Executive Committee in an online format on December 9-10. The meeting was initially planned to be held in-person in Lucerne, but as the Winter Universiade has been cancelled, the meeting was held online.
FISU Acting President Mr Leonz Eder started the meeting with the words of welcome and reflections on the cancellation of the organisation’s flagship winter event in Switzerland. FISU Secretary General Mr Eric Saintrond further on presented the changes in programmes and activities of the organisation due to the cancellation.
Also the representatives of the Organising Committee Lucerne 2021 presented their reports, highlighting the difficult decision which had to be taken due to the restrictions and decisions of the government taken just before the event would start. Despite this unfortunate turn of events, the event will have some positive legacy as well, having a short track speed skating high performance centre, as well as several projects in dual career, sports development, innovation, inspiration, and development of student sports.
Members of the organising committee Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games outlined their plans for the Games which will be held in June 2022, after the postponement from the summer of 2021.
Several FISU Committees and Departments presented their reports as well, in the field of Medical, Education and Development, Gender Equality, Education, Healthy Campus and Universities Relations.
The second day of the FISU Executive Committee meeting started with the updates on the 2022 FISU Championships and FISU World Cups. Next year, 22 events are confirmed in 17 countries across 4 continents. FISU Treasurer Mr Bayasgalan Danzandorj also reported on the finances and the budget of the organisation.
A look to future FISU World University Games hosts was also on the agenda, concluding the meeting. First up was a report from the Lake Placid 2023 FISU Games, followed by the Ekaterinburg 2023 FISU Games, Torino 2025 FISU Games and the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games.
