FASU Games 2012
The 6th All Africa University Games, the FASU Games, are being were held at the University of Namibia in Windhoek, Namibia between December 15 and 22, 2012. More than 700 student athletes from 18 countries are participating in 9 sports, namely Volleyball, Basketball, Football, Netball, Table Tennis, Chess, Karate and Athletics.
TISAN, the Tertiary Institutes Sports Association of Namibia, in conjunction with the Government of Namibia and the University of Namibia are hosting the 6th FASU Games which are a great success. Originally planned to be hosted in Senegal, FASU had to find a new host, and TISAN put the games in place in less than 3 months.
The Games are held under the slogan "United on the smile of Africa" because their country, Namibia, is widely regarded by many as the smile of Africa due to its diverse population living together in harmony. The event logo symbolizes African student athletes, coming together in Namibia under the banner of FASU, to compete against each other in different sport codes and also experience the warm Namibian hospitality.
At the Opening Ceremony on December 17 in the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek, prof. Lazarus Hangula, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Namibia highlighted the importance of sports and culture for the development of the society and for the education of young students. He welcomed the participants in Namibia and encouraged them to make Namibia their home. EUSA was represented at the ceremony by Mr Leonz Eder, EUSA Vice-President.
FASU 1st Vice-President Leopold Germain Senghor thanked the NUSF of Namibia who accepted to organize the game after Senegal couldn't host it for many reasons. "We appreciate the great support, the FASU General Assembly and the Games have received from the Namibian Government, the University of Namibia and especially from TISAN," Senghor said.
"The All Africa University Games are a celebration of Sports. Like we say in FISU, they exist to promote the 'Excellence in Mind and Body'. On behalf of FASU, it is my great pleasure to welcome you here in Windhoek at the FASU Games, part of the program of African University movement," Mr Senghor stated.
Mr Jerry Ekandjo, Minister of Youth National Service, Sport and Culture, officially opened the 6th FASU Games. TISAN President Mr Werner Jeffery finally addressed a vote of thanks to all the involved persons and institutions, namely also the great number of volunteers from the University of Namibia.
