EUSA’s continental sister organisation FASU, the Federation of African University Sports, is this year celebrating its 50^th anniversary, marking the occasion with several events over the remainder of the year.

Formed in 1971 by 17 universities from 10 African countries, FASU has grown in leaps and bounds, and now represents the national university sports governing bodies from 45 different countries.

In honour of reaching its milestone 50th year of existence, the association has organised a number of activities to reflect on the association’s past, present, and future. These activities will run until the end of 2021 under the theme “FASU @50, history harnessing the future”.

“Over the last half-century, FASU has survived recessions, wars, health crises, technology and societal transformations and a whole host of other innovations and events that could have probably killed it,” said FASU administrator Mr. Hannington Musoke. “The next 50 years will likely be even more challenging, so this milestone should be used to put a stake in the ground of how we're prepared for what comes next. This is probably the last major anniversary where some of the people who took part in the founding of FASU are still alive.”

The 50th anniversary celebrations will capture the insights, characters and reality of FASU's early eras from the people with first-hand knowledge who witnessed the association’s growth. These include a special gala event, as well as monthly online webinars covering different topics regarding African university sport.

Continuing the celebrations into next year will be the 10^th edition of the All Africa Games, scheduled to take place at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya from June 6-10, 2022. Initially set to take place in 2020 but postponed due to the global Coronavirus outbreak, organisers re expecting 4000 participants from across the continent to attend the five-day multi-sport event.
