European Universities Judo Championship
Coimbra, Portugal: July 24-27, 2017
The European Universities Judo Championship 2017 was held in Coimbra, Portugal, as part of a combined event that also included the European Universities Championships of Karate and Taekwondo, bringing the combat sports together. The Judo competitions alone involved 195 athletes, representing 103 universities from 18 countries.
The event was one of the largest EUSA events of the year, and functioned as a test event for the upcoming European Universities Games 2018, in Coimbra. Organised by the University of Coimbra and it’s Sport Department, in cooperation with the Portuguese Universities Sports Federation (FADU) and the Academic Association of Coimbra (AAC).
EUSA was formally represented by Mr Dmitry Kiselev and Mr Francis Cirianni, Executive Committee members, supported by Mr Besim Aliti, Sports Manager at EUSA, and by EUSA Technical Delegate, Mr Branislav Crnogorac, assisted by Ms Arijana Jaha. The team was also supported by the EUSA Project Assistant, Mr Liam Smith.
Beside the individual medals, the first place of the most successful universities was taken by the University of Cologne (GER), the second place was assigned to University of Coimbra (POR), followed by Stanislaw Staszic University of Applied Sciences in Pila (POL) in third.
All the athletes were invited to take part in the European Universities Games 2018, in Coimbra, before the EUSA flag was passed to the organisers of the first edition of the European Universities Combat Championships including Judo, Taekwondo, Karate, and Kickboxing, which will be held in Zagreb, Croatia, in 2019.
