Fuengirola, Spain: September 20-24, 2017


The European Universities Chess Championship 2017 was held in Fuengirola, Spain, along with the European Universities Bridge Championship. The event hosted over 110 participants from 25 universities, representing 15 European countries in total.

The championships were organised by the International University of Andalucia and the Spanish University Sport Committee, in collaboration with several local partners in Fuengirola and with the support of two governing bodies, the European Bridge League (EBL) and the European Chess Union (ECU). The Organising Committee, with Mr Rifaat Chabouk and Mr Torres Aquilar, have already successfully organised the European Universities Games in Cordoba, Spain back in 2012.

EUSA was officially represented by the member of the Executive Committee, Mr Wolfgang Fruhauf, and by EUSA Technical Delegate for Chess Mr Oleksandr Sulypa, along with EUSA Office staff Mr Liam Smith.

The women’s Team competition saw the Ural State Mining University (RUS) gaining the first position and achieving the gold medal. In the men’s Team competition, after an engaging match-up against the University of Belgrade (SRB), the Ural State Mining University (RUS) won and therefore gained the gold medal in the men’s category.

However, the University of Belgrade (SRB) did take gold in the men’s Blitz category, where Marko Nenezic achieved the first place. In the women’s Blitz competition the Ural State Mining University (RUS) gained the third gold, with Daria Voit winning the competition.

The importance of sport as an integral part of student life was highlighted by the celebrations of the European Week of Sport, during the Championships, in which athletes and officials took part in beach games activities, enjoying the sunny coastal location of these championships.

At the conclusion of the event, the EUSA flag was lowered and consigned to the representative of the Organising Committee of next European Universities Bridge and Chess Championships, which will be held in Budapest, Hungary, in 2019.
