EUSA pays tribute to former FISU President

George E. Killian, former President of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) died Wednesday, December 6, at the age of 93.

Mr Killian started his career as a basketball coach at the Wharton High School and later at Erie Community College in the USA, continued to being the President and later on Executive Director of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) in the USA. He was a long-time member of the United States Collegiate Sports Council, now known as the United States International University Sports Federation (US-IUSF).

Between 1990 and 1998, Mr Killian served as the President of FIBA, the global governing body of basketball, and was a prominent member of the board of directors for USA Basketball for 26 years. He also served on the United States Olympic Committee’s Board of Directors from 1967 to 2004, as well as the International Olympic Committee from 1996 to 1998.

The international university sports community knows him from his roles in FISU, where he was the Vice President between 1987 and 1995, 1st Vice-President between 1995 and 1999, as well as the President of FISU for two mandates, in the period 1999-2011.

The vision, dedication, leadership and positive outlook of Mr Killian made a significant impact on university sport all round the world, and he leaves behind an impressive legacy. The European University Sports Association (EUSA) expresses our condolences to his family and friends and pay tribute to his memory.
