EUSA Games: New medallists

The 1st European Universities Games are in full motion; Tuesday was definitely special to badminton players, as they are the first athletes to finish the sports competition at the EUSA Games here in Cordoba, Spain.


With the finals of the singles and doubles being played today, we have new champions – in men’s singles: V. Malkov, Saratov State University (RUS); women's singles: A. Chervyakova, Nizhny Novgorod State University (RUS); men's doubles: S. Gransbo & P. Nordin, Stockholm University (SWE); women's doubles: K. Buss & I. Wienefeld, University of Duisburg-Essen (GER) and A. Roovers & K. Buss in mixed doubles representing the same university. The awards and medals were presented by the President of the Organising Committee Mr Manuel Torres, Treasurer of EUSA Mr Olaf Tabor and the Mayor of Encinarejo Mr Ruiz Madruga. After the competition, all the participants were also waved goodbye by the strong local volunteer’s team, represented by the whole local community, with special emphasis on the youth.

Although the competitions in badminton concluded, the Games are far from over - official closing will be on July 23 in the evening. Football now went into the second stage of the competition; handball, futsal and tennis being in full swing, and basketball starting today.

The finals in beach volleyball are tomorrow, and we look forward to seeing who will be the champions.

Executive Committee Members of the European University Sports Association, lead by EUSA President Mr Roczek, have also been visiting the venues, commending the high quality of the matches and motivation of the student athletes taking part in the Games.

So far, over 2300 participants have been registered and accredited, with athletes and officials of two more sports to come in the following days – table tennis and rugby 7s.
