EUSA Executive Committe Meeting in Coimbra

The last Executive Committee meeting of the European University Sports Association (EUSA) this year was held on November 28 and 29, 2014 in Coimbra, Portugal – the host of the European Universities Games 2018. Accompanied also by official receptions with the Mayor at the City Hall and the Rector at the University of Coimbra, EUSA EC members had a full agenda.

The general reports were given by EUSA President Mr Adam Roczek and Secretary General Mr Matjaz Pecovnik, highlighting the recent developments and activities from the previous meeting.

Mr Olaf Tabor, EUSA Treasurer, gave a financial report and also presented the work of the finances and marketing commission, including the draft of the new marketing plan.

Student Commission meeting was held parallel to the EC meeting

Chair of other commissions also reported on their activities. EUSA Student Commission (STC), chaired by Mr Bruno Barracosa, submitted their report. At the occasion of the EC meeting, the STC met for the last time in this composition, as the mandate of half of the members is ending. At the EC meeting, the new 4 members have been elected and will start their work shortly.

Mr Leonz Eder presented the work and plans of the Media and Communication Commission, and Mr Haris Pavletic of the Medical Commission – both chairs of the before-mentioned commissions. EUSA Sports Manager Mr Patrik Perosa presented the highlights of the work of the Technical Commission, including the proposals and reports of the EUSA Technical Delegates.

EUSA Executive Committee also approved a new Commission on Equal Opportunities, chaired by Mr Aitor Canibe Sanchez, which will soon become operational and cover the topics of wider inclusion, dealing with topics such as gender equality, students with disabilities and impairments…

The Executive Committee members were acquainted with the EUSA Seminar for Technical Delegates, which was combined with the EUSA Convention 2014, and confirmed the general programme of the next EUSA Conference, which will be held in Zagreb, Croatia between March 26 and 29, 2015.

EUGames 2014 OC Chair Mr Daniel Sikkens

Focusing on the largest project being coordinated by EUSA – the European Universities Games, the past edition of the 2014 European Universities Games Rotterdam was evaluated. Representing the Organising Committee, Mr Daniel Sikkens, Chair; Mr Henk Smit, Tournament Director and Mr John Poot, Treasurer presented the Final report from the Games in Rotterdam, cherishing the success of the event.

At this occasion Mr Sikkens presented a special award to EUSA for all the help and cooperation towards the delivery of a very successful event, which also got recognition and support from the European Union through the Erasmus+ programme and the International University Sports Federation (FISU).

Presentation of the European Universities Games Coimbra 2018

Being in the host city of the European Universities Games 2018, the delegation of the Organisers and the national university sports association - FADU, presented their progress report. Chair of the Bidding Committee Mr Ricardo Morgado presented the past events, introducing the new Secretary General of the Games Mr Mario Santos. Present was also the FADU President Ms Filipa Godinho and other representatives, including the ones from the University and City of Coimbra.

EUSA EC members were also acquainted with the progress report and evaluation visit of the European Universities Games Zagreb-Rijeka 2016. On the topic of the European Universities Championships, EUSA EC confirmed the calendar for 2015, taking into account some small changes. Registration for the next year’s EUSA Championships will open on December 1, 2014. The Executive Committee also attributed the European Universities Championships for 2017 for all sports except golf, where bidding will be reopen.

Discussions and presentations

Based on the past discussions, feedback from the members and various proposals, the Executive Committee adopted a change within the age-limit role for participants of EUSA Championships and Games; from 2015 onwards university students aged 17-30 are legible to take part in the EUSA-governed sports events.

EUSA EC members also discussed the projects supported by the European Union (EU) and the International University Sports Federation (FISU), as well as the international cooperation between the existing and potential new partners and other organisations, presented by Secretary General Mr Pecovnik and the Communications and Projects Manager Mr Andrej Pisl.

Visiting sports facilities

The participants were also able to visit some of the venues where the Games will take place in 2018, and explore the charms of the City of Coimbra.
