EUSA-EUG2024 Convention held in Hungary
Between June 1 and 4, the EUSA-EUG 2024 Convention took place in Budapest, Debrecen and Miskolc. The event was organised by the European University Sports Association (EUSA) and local organising committee of the European Universities Games Debrecen-Miskolc 2024 (EUG2024).
EUSA was represented at the event by delegated Executive Committee members, staff, Technical Delegates and Medical Commission Chair. The European Universities European Universities Games Debrecen-Miskolc 2024 (EUG2024) were represented by the operational members of the Organising Committee, national technical delegates, and representatives of the Hungarian University Sports Federation (HUSF/MESF). The event was attended also by representatives of the previous European Universities Games Lodz 2022 (EUG2022), as well as the upcoming ones in Salerno 2026 (EUG2026).
After the arrival of participants on June 1st, the programme kicked off on June 2nd. The first session was the EUSA Internal meeting. Ms Ivana Ertlova, EUSA Vice-president and Chair of the Technical Commission, welcomed the participants and wished them a pleasant and productive time at EUSA-EUG Convention 2024.
EUSA Sports Manager Mr Miha Zvan then presented the programme agenda, the technical commission and the EUSA Operational Documents 2024. He also gave an introduction to this year’s European Universities Championships and the next year’s European Universities Games.
EUSA Sports Officer Ms Eszter Gulyas gave an overview with more information of the current season of the European Universities Championships for all sports.
After the EUSA Internal meeting, the main part of the EUSA-EUG 2024 Convention officially started. MEFS Secretary General Mr Peter Juhasz and EUSA First Vice-President Mr Haris Pavletic welcomed all participants and wished them a fruitful and productive convention.
EUSA Secretary General Mr Matjaz Pecovnik also greeted and welcomed all participants, and gave a presentation about EUSA, its structure and activities.
EUG2024 OC Project Manager Mr Laszlo Vegh gave an overview of the plans and preparations of the European Universities Games Debrecen and Miskolc, presented the activity plan for 2023 and the next steps on project level.
EUSA Sports Manager Mr Zvan introduced the EUSA Sports programme to the participants of the event.
Mr Pecovnik explained to the audience the role of EUSA Representatives during the sports events. Mr Tomasz Aftanski, EUSA Technical Delegate for Futsal, presented the role of the EUSA Technical Delegates.
Just before lunch, MEFS Vice Secretary General Mr Gyorgy Kovacs gave n introduction to the sports programme of the European Universities Games 2024.
LOC representatives Ms Kata Varga presented in details the plan for Debrecen and Ms Reka Molnar for Miskolc, introducing the sports and venues for the EUG 2024 in the two cities.
The next part was dedicated to the medical and catering aspects, and was covered by Ms Abosede Ajayi, EUSA Medical Commission Chair.
The registrations and accreditations process were then presented by Ms Aleksandra Andreeva, EUSA Sports Administrator.
Before moving to the panel discussion, the Polish delegation talked about the EUG 2022 in Lodz. Mr Dominik Lezanski, EUG 2022 Main Coordinator, gave an overview of the event and its legacy. Ms Iwona Neroj, Coordinator of the Organisation Department of EUG 2022, talked about the main operational fields, including transportation, accommodation, catering, accreditation, volunteers, marketing, educational events. Mr Kamil Kozlowski, EUG 2022 Sports Manager, presented the sports programme and related experiences in Lodz.
The panel discussion was then held, with the main topic being the lessons learned from the EUG Lodz 2022. The panel discussion was moderated by Ms Natasa Jankovic, EUSA Consultant, and featured the EUG2022 delegation and Ms Sara Rozman, EUSA Education and Development Manager.
The last speech was given by Mr Michele Ruocco, CUS Salerno Secretary General. Since the 2026 European Universities Games will be held in the city of Salerno, it was appropriate to give some context to the audience about it.
The second day of EUSA Convention was later concluded with an official dinner, with speeches by MEFS President Lajos Mocsai, MEFS Secretary General Mr Peter Juhasz, EUSA 1st Vice-President Mr Haris Pavletic, and EUG2024 OC Project Manager Mr Laszlo Vegh. The event was attended by the representatives of the Hungarian authorities, including the delegates of the both hosting cities, universities, as well as governing sports federations and key national entities.
On June 3, EUSA representatives and Technical Delegates visited Debrecen and Miskolc to inspect the venues for the EUG 2024. Once the inspections were finished, the preparation of reports started.
In the afternoon, the expeditions returned to Budapest and met with the organising committee to make conclusions of the inspection visits. After a productive session of presentations for each sport, accommodations, catering and accreditations centres, the convention was wrapped up by Mr Laszlo Vegh.
The next edition of the European Universities Games will be held in the Hungarian cities of Debrecen and Miskolc in July 2024. The 7th edition of the event will be the largest university sport event in Hungary since 1965, when the Summer Universiade (World University Games) was held in Budapest.
