EUSA EUG2018 Supervision Commission visit in Coimbra

Between October 15 and 17, EUSA Supervision Commission visited Coimbra and during three days did a follow-up of the preparations for the European Universities Games (EUG) Coimbra 2018. The Commission was lead by EUSA’s Vice-President, Mr Haris Pavletic as Supervision Commission Chair, Mr Dmitry Kiselev and Mr Aitor Canibe Sanchez as Supervision Commission members, together with EUSA Secretary General Mr Matjaz Pecovnik and Sports Manager Mr Besim Aliti.

During this visit, the Supervision Commission members had several meetings with the Organizing Committee on organizational matters such as sport progress, venues and equipment, human resources, national federations, result management, accommodation, catering, transport operations, ceremonies, volunteers etc.

Inspection visit

The Organising Committee (OC) is making progress as we are getting closer to the games, but some of the areas will have to be set as the highest priority in the upcoming period in order to ensure a quality event. EUSA Supervision Commission strongly believes that the OC being led by its Secretary General Mr Mario Santos, will be able to meet all the necessary requirements and organize a great event.

One of the key moments was the inspection visit of the sport venues, that happened on Monday. EUSA’s Supervision Commission visited the University Stadium where they saw the progress related to the venues and related construction in public areas. The visit was also accompanied by local and national press.

Mr Pavletic addressing the media

EUSA Supervision Commission Chair Mr Pavletic stated for the media: "The organization has several challenges ahead, mainly regarding accommodation and transportation. But we are sure everything will go as planned. This EUG’s fourth edition will surely be a success we can remember in time."

Mr Santos, Organizing Committee Secretary General, highlighted that the organizing structure will increase in the following months and that will be key to assure the success of the event. He stressed the substantial legacy for Coimbra. The university community will largely benefit from all the venues renewal, allowing Coimbra to be a reference in Europe for dual careers.

Venue visit

The President of Portuguese University Sport Federation (FADU) Mr Daniel Monteiro stressed the commitment and support of the national government to the organization of the event: "We are working close with the Portuguese Government. We are closing the funding contract for the event and we have a strong commitment from their side which is very important to assure the success of EUG 2018."

The visit helped define the next steps towards the EUG 2018, which will host 13 sports and several accompanying events next July in Coimbra, Portugal.
