EUSA celebrates International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2017

December 3 has been proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The annual observance of the day was proclaimed in 1992 (initially called International Day of Disabled Persons), aimed at promoting the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development, and to increase awareness.

Building on many decades of UN’s work in the field of disability, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, adopted in 2006, has further advanced the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and other international development frameworks. The 2017 theme as set by UN is the Transformation towards sustainable and resilient society for all.

European University Sports Association (EUSA), in cooperation with the European Paralympic Committee (EPC) and local organisers, strategically started working in the field of inclusion of students with disabilities in the larger university sport events. Starting from 2016, the European Universities Games now include sports for students with disabilities as integral part of the event, and also include people with disabilities and impairments in organisation of the event.
