European Week of Sport kicks off in Espoo
The #beactive European Week of Sport, which takes place between September 23 and 30 throughout Europe, kicked off on Monday in Espoo, Finland which currently holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union.
The opening of this year’s event was done in the presence of the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport Mr Tibor Navracsics.
European University Sports Association (EUSA) is one of the official partners of the European Commission for the European Week of Sport and the #beactive campaign, which follows soon after Friday’s International Day of University Sport.
Since its launch in 2015, the European Week of Sport has brought together hundreds of organisations and offers demonstrations in several sports, also offering information about the benefits of sports activities and healthy nutrition.
This year’s fifth edition began with a conference entitled "Safeguarding Children in Sport", with a number of high-profile sporting authorities present to discuss this topic, while almost 10 000 school children had the opportunity to #BeActive and try different sports and physical activities in a local sports park.
Last year, 12 million participants from over 48 000 separate events across Europe celebrated the European Week of Sport across the seven days, and with 42 countries participating in this year’s event, it is hoped 2019’s numbers will reach even greater heights.
The European Week of Sport and the #beactive campaign are an initiative by the European Commission, promoting sport & physical activity across Europe. Together with the national coordinators and partners organisations, among them also EUSA, we’re not only making Europe healthier, but we’re also strengthening the continent based on our shared values and interests.
This year EUSA celebrates the European Week of Sport and the International Day of University Sport with the EUSA Conference, Extraordinary General Assembly and Gala, which will be accompanied by #letsidus #beactive sports activities, thus promoting the initiatives and encouraging our members and partners to join.
