European Week of Sport 2016 Flagship Conference

On 15 September, in the context of the European Week of Sport, the European Commission hosted in Brussels a conference on good governance in sport as the flagship event. European University Sports Association (EUSA) also took part in the event.

The event consisted of workshop on the subject matters, exhibition of related projects, sports activities and plenary sessions, examining not only the challenges being faced in the world of sport, but also looking at the opportunities to change and modernise sport and to promote a culture of good governance.

EUSA representative Mr Andrej Pisl, Communications and Projects Manager, attended the event, contributing in the workshops, meeting partners and taking part in special event challenge.

Plenary discussions and debates

The Conference was opened by Mrs Martine Reicherts, Director General for Education and Culture at the European Commission. After the keynote speech, two panel debates were organised with representatives of educational institutions, sports governing bodies and European institutions.

Video address by Commissioner Navracsics

In a video message, Mr Tibor Navracsics, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, underlined his personal commitment and support to European sport organisations and federations, at all levels, to help them implement the necessary reforms. Among the issues discussed, a declaration on good governance was presented, inviting sport bodies to pledge their support and commit to promote and implement basic principles of good governance in sport: integrity, transparency, accountability, democracy and inclusivity.

Performance by Rhythmics Gymnastics team

Special delight was the performance by the Spanish rhythmics gymnastics team, who won silver medal at the Rio Olympics. The Flagship event was also an opportunity to present the special #BeActive Awards.

Beactive awards recipients

EUSA, an official partner of the European Week of Sport and the #beactive campaign, was one of the first signatories of the declaration.
